I personally feel that an alternate 2007 server will be great. I've been playing on and off of Runescape as both a member and non-member for 9-10 years now, and I feel that the appealing aspect of Runescape has been dropping at an exponentially increasing rate over the years. Simplicity is what attracted many others like myself over the years, and the lack and lack of this after every few years is what drives people away. After logging onto the game after the Combat Evolution update, I have never felt so lost. Before I could just log on every few months, figure out what was going on, and go on with my merry business, but the Combat Evolution was a major blow in the head for me. Every reason why I played Runescape as an elementary school student had just gone down the toilet, and any chance I had of staying in Runescape were long gone. No, this is not to say that change in the game is bad, but that the game encountered a fork road and then just decided to take a wrong turn. I don't think I would have ever posted here again or visited Runescape ever again if I hadn't glimpsed this on Facebook.
After flipping through the notice about this, I noted something off. If this server were to be implemented, the only ones who could play this would be those could pay for it monthly. Granted, it does take money to manage the game, but a monthly fee just flat out states "We're not in it for the fans, we're in it for the money". Money is what will mitigate the hopes of many to return to a game that they hope to enjoy once money, money is what will cause less people to be enthusiastic about this idea.
Why not just a one-time fee of $5-$10 instead? More players will be attracted since they won't be dissuaded by a hefty monthly fee and it's a reasonable price. Paying heftily monthly is a matter of devotion, and many former Runescape players aren't willing to be that devoted into a game they played casually. It's Nexon's job to dry people out of money, not yours Jagex.
