American currency (and a number of other currencies) is green because green ink was originally used on the back sides of bills as a measure against counterfeiting, as color photographs did not yet exist. When bills were standardized in the early 20th Century, green ink was commonplace and robust, and the color was considered auspicious for legal tender because it signifies stability, so it continued to be used.
