The bump count is a bit of a trifling feature anyhow, but given there are threads with way more than 5ish bumps as evidenced by

above, you may be onto something here.. I'd agree that the 2,999/3,000 might be an example of hitting a limit while resetting to 0 after just a handful (or from any number, for that matter I suppose) might be more towards a touch of a bug.
I'd assume there's a column in the database for bump count and, when bumped, we bump the thread and increment the value in that column by 1 for the thread in question. The bump counter would just read the value currently stored and display it. If there's no function to decrement that counter (which there isn't.. at least not for us, that I know of), one of the many reasons I can think of that would make it reset to zero would be the function submitting a null value which the database defaults to a zero... but then you'd think it wouldn't work at all, not just a few times before resetting. </thinkingoutloud>
