Ah responsive design - where my heart truly is. There is nothing really stopping us doing this on our site other than time. I am really wishing we made the forums responsive when I updated them. I have been kicking myself ever since.

I have built a responsive mockup for them - it is not actually very difficult it is just a ton of work that myself and the team would need to put in. But it is definately I think the most important update to the website as a whole that we should make moving forwards. Mod Erni*r (my former lead) did a great job on our splash site:

http://***.runescape.***/splash

I would like to emphasize, Jagex as a company needs to take care of this Runescape board. By keeping the software relevant with the current technology that other modern websites have taken advantage of.

Runescape players deserve to have a scalable, flexible and modern board that takes advantage of modern browsers. It is time for Jagex to spend money for RSOF software overhaul.

Thanks for responding, as that is highly appreciated. But you aren't the decision maker that can decide, we need commitment from the decision maker Jmods - for them to see where we are coming from.

Believe me when I say this... we are well aware of the need to update the RuneScape site to act responsively and be substantially more efficient. The "Decision maker JMODs" have been listening (and continue to do so) - cannot really give you anymore info than that.

Feel free top bring up ideas of where we should focus out updates (though I imagine all of you here will say RSOF) :)

To be honest when we do a site update I imagine we will change the design to suit device needs - mobile first FTW ;)

If you want to generate some revenue, update the website to allow for multiple image skins, and sell some of the skins for a few RuneCoins in Solomon's General Store. It would also mean you could easily add some festive touches to the website during the holidays, such as a Christmas theme skin.

Adding additional skins causes a deviation from the brand. The brand needs to be consistent and in that sense I cannot see us ever adding additional skins concurrently for the RS site. It's not about the money :)

I think that is considered heresy by upper management right now, I will miss you sorely Mod Allstar just like Chrisso, RIP web team devs.

Speaking of skins though, will you ever include a plainer and brighter skin? So maybe not a reskin but what about recolourings? I mean unless the brand is specifically "dimly lit" like with what happens in caves with high detail lighting.

Only if you're doing things like adding "Sonic The Hedgehog" themes.

In my opinion, the only thing in the brand that needs to stay fairly consistent is the logo. So long as the logo stays consistent, the brand is easily recognized, the rest of the website is just aesthetics, and can easily be adapted into various skins.

Rule #1: It's ALWAYS about the money. ;)

Or "Dem jpeg algorithms". Sometimes it's hard to believe Jagex is serious about the branding, when the website graphics were butchered to save a slight bit of bandwidth. :P

People want different things. Some want a lighter theme, some want the oldschool solid brown theme. Some want a fancy shiny gold theme. I'm pretty sure if I were to shell out some RuneCoins for a specific website theme, I'd know exactly where I was, and what brand I was supporting. ^_^

But hey, you guys do what you wanna do. It's your website, not mine. ;)

In my opinion I think trust has been a little bit broken off late between what players believe to be the "upper-management" and the community. The reality is the company is always listening to what the players want - sadly that does not mean we can implement every request that is made as we need to balance that with deadlines and budgets. After all, nobody here is naive enough to think that we do not need the player base and if we only do what we want we will still be able to exist as a company. :)

Updates such as redesigning the website are not a simple case of just changing a few hex values and adding a few media queries.

Remember we have to account for:

branding
content and meta information
UX Design
Mobile first development (see DarkScape for an example)
development planning
consulting stakeholders across the business
the future of browsers
the "under-the-hood" tech
the list goes on...

I am very much a fan of going for a more slick and less image-heavy design. But branding has a very large impact on how the average user operates and interacts with any website. Asthetics are important - customisable skins do not really add much to a website. Very few people would probably use them and it makes UX work and A/B testing a lot more tricky.

I think if you focus on just those two lots of forum regulars will love you, but that's only my feeling. I'm assuming under the hood tech is referring to stuff like the forum software? It's good you are considering it.

Well actually we have already started our mobile first approach. See...

RuneScape Website Login

We are starting small and ramping up our component based design. Currently our main focus on #webMeat is supporting RS Chronicle but after that the sky is the limit :)
