Forum participation for me almost totally stopped because of the EXTREME Log-in procedure to have to endure to post. This makes it a royal PITA just to make a simple post, ask or answer a question, look for help, offer help, or connect with others for an activity.

I read forum posts on a daily basis, but because of the Extreme pain I have to endure to post, I almost always am on read only mode and move on. Was this intentionally made difficult by Jagex to kill the forums? Probably not initially, but when they saw the effects adding the first layer of extra security had on forum participation, they saw an opportunity to kill the forums completely by adding on another layer in my opinion. This will free up a little of the Mods time to be used on other projects or concerns.

I participate in many many forums, but no longer having my log-in credentials saved so they have to be typed in and having to go to my e-mail for a log-in code every time I want to make a post is just not user friendly. This, in my opinion, is designed to dissuade users from participating in the forums.

This is what killed forum participation for me a long time ago. The effort to save the forums is futile as long as Jagex continues to make posting to the forums as difficult as possible. The petition to save the forums has few posts on it for this very reason in my opinion.

So, goodbye to the forums. You will be missed by me. Without some drastic changes, which are not going to happen, there is no saving you.

Just to add, because of the time it took to make this post, I had to endure going through the whole log-in procedure again. Unreal.

I agree, i have refrained from posting many times simply because i couldn't be bothered to grab my phone from the other end of the room, just to type my auth code lol.

Now with passwords having to be extremely complex with the Jagex client, logging in sometimes involves running around the house to get my password notes, using my phone to use the Authenticator app before finally being able to post.

I doubt this was done on purpose and was simply an oversight, but it sure didn't help.

Agreed, two factor authentication to access and post on the forums is ridiculous. I used to occasionally browse the forums however I just can't be bothered anymore.

I often read/post on the Forums whilst playing.

If I am not already logged in to the site, I sometimes click in-game on Upgrades & Extras > Solomon's General Store > this opens browser, logging you into the site. Takes you out of the game, although you can reconnect quickly.

Not the most user friendly, but an alternative.

I just load the website homepage, hit login, boom authenticated without having to sign in.

Can last quite a while....very easy...not as horrendous as people claim it is. Takes a while to get used to new paths but eh, it works.

why it wouldn't if you logged in via the forums who knows.
New web pages, working with older webscript pages, not surprised some places have to have you re-authenticate.

Homepage is the document_root, main domain, so likely has better session management cross-domain than a subdomain like the forums are on.
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

I click the log in button while on the forums page and I still need to authenticate every time. sometimes I do it through solomon's when I'm claiming the monthly free cosmetic. If logging in from the main page is somehow better than from the forums page despite using the same button, that's a pretty big oversight specifically affecting people trying to use the forums.

I could deal with having to log back in when it was just typing in a password but the new email authentication is too much. I generally go to the site primarily for the forums, so I actually haven't been checking the site news as often in addition to not going to the forums as much because of how annoying it is to log in. It makes it absurdly difficult and annoying if you know you're too busy to actually post anything the time it'll take to read the threads you're interested in.

The petition is actually doing quite well. Lots of posts in just two days. The log in constraints don't help but we're seeing lurkers post their thoughts while they still can. I think that means a lot.

Before you click on the forum link from the main page, log into the website, then click the forum link.

This requires no passwords, two-factor authentication, emails, or anything else. It simply remembers who you are, what your login credentials are, and logs you in.

Unfortunately it only works from the main page. You will always get the authentication method if you try to log in from a forum page.

That does seem to work. Quite a bit late now to know this. It should have been the same from the forums page. Since people don't usually log-in from the home page when just reading the news and generally bypass this step like I usually did, the different log-in method from the forums page seems pretty stupid.

The buttons look the same and appear in the same spot so one might assume they were the same log-in method. So like me, they would think website log in was an extreme pain to be avoided at all costs and thus not bother as my original post stated.

They should have been the same and maybe the forums would have got a lot more use/posts and not killed. Could have been intentional by Jagex to kill the forums. Guess we may never know why they did it.

ive not had these issues logging into rs homepage. its only on rare occasions would i need to get my authenticator.

just login from the lobby (clicking on pretty much anything that will transfer you to the rs website)
or
click login at the home page. (thats where data is saved)

doing it when you are in the forums will trigger the authentication
