Forum participation for me almost totally stopped because of the EXTREME Log-in procedure to have to endure to post. This makes it a royal PITA just to make a simple post, ask or answer a question, look for help, offer help, or connect with others for an activity.
I read forum posts on a daily basis, but because of the Extreme pain I have to endure to post, I almost always am on read only mode and move on. Was this intentionally made difficult by Jagex to kill the forums? Probably not initially, but when they saw the effects adding the first layer of extra security had on forum participation, they saw an opportunity to kill the forums completely by adding on another layer in my opinion. This will free up a little of the Mods time to be used on other projects or concerns.
I participate in many many forums, but no longer having my log-in credentials saved so they have to be typed in and having to go to my e-mail for a log-in code every time I want to make a post is just not user friendly. This, in my opinion, is designed to dissuade users from participating in the forums.
This is what killed forum participation for me a long time ago. The effort to save the forums is futile as long as Jagex continues to make posting to the forums as difficult as possible. The petition to save the forums has few posts on it for this very reason in my opinion.
So, goodbye to the forums. You will be missed by me. Without some drastic changes, which are not going to happen, there is no saving you.
Just to add, because of the time it took to make this post, I had to endure going through the whole log-in procedure again. Unreal.
