Actually, no - I didn't visit/frequent any CC's of that time, unfortunately.

Ahh, yeah that's a trip back - I remember the first time I saw a JMod use that script in a post. Definitely makes things feel more holiday-festive.

Food scientists have finally managed to remove the mint flavor from gum! The ex-spearmint was a success!
I started using the forums some time around 2007 I think and only posted occasionally at first. One of my first memories is having a thread locked by Joel.
It was called something like "What's wrong with people??!!" and was locked for obvious (though not to me at the time) reasons. (To Joel's credit, he took the time to explain it to me).
Gradually I got drawn in and found myself posting more and more and really enjoying the forums. A couple of years later they (Mod Calm) foolishly invited me to be an FMod.
The first month, I remember sneaking into Rants for a look round and leaving quickly as there were so many scary people and threads.
It definitely had its darker side back then - spam attacks, mass posting of memes, ascii "art" (some of it pretty bad) etc.
But slowly, (and to my surprise) Rants became my home as I discovered it could be a lively and interesting and often funny place.
I fondly remember Jon H, Poppy and Chrisso being very active on the forums, and made a point of
stalking
finding them when I visited Runefest many years later.
I also met quite a few other FMods and a couple of regular forumers, and it was nice putting faces to names.
As mentioned by Nick, there was definitely a "Golden Age" and it's such a shame that the forums have become less popular as people use social media more and more.
I'm still here though (obviously) and it's always good to hear from people who have been around for a long time... and I love reading memories like this.

I discovered the forums in 2009. I was at a community event when this chap called Mod Aiko kept going on about the Dutch forums and how awesome they were. I checked and... well, he wasn't wrong.
I met some of the most amazing people on the Dutch forums.
One of my favourite forums at the time was Jagex Lite, with the legendary 'In b4 Mod X' thread. The casual interaction between staff and players was what made that forum great.
In 2010 I received my first FMod invitation, which I declined due to time restraints. I received another one in 2013, which I accepted. Unfortunately due to time constraints, I had to resign a year later. It didn't feel right to stay on the team when I barely made any contributions. I never stopped posting on the forums, though. Although I did start to use another account (this one). Much to my surprise, Mod Balance decided to send me another invitation in 2017 and the rest is history.
Ah fond recollections. I remember getting my invite from Mod Hohbein going this has to be a joke, I'd never heard of them and figured a real F-mod invite would come from one of the 9 F-mod curators at the time. Nope it came from the P-mod curator instead, which of course I found out after the fact when I asked who on earth they were of the F-Mod curators at the time.

Heh. I got the "OK" from Calm almost immediately, and I dove headfirst into that cesspool.
I still remember that time I got told to "go eat bicycle seat" from some angry ranter. To this day, I'll never understand that insult, but, I'll also never forget it.
