I remember when I first started playing around 2007, I remember making a post about how to get started and the best things to do, as I had no clue what the best things to do were, and there was nothing thrown at new players back then, you were to just explore.

From memory, the thread I made was locked due to not being in the correct forum section by one of the current FMods (I won't name who ;) ), but it was enough to scare me away from the forums (due to how rude sounding the lock post was) and even game itself. I left for about 5 months before coming back to try the game again, however I made sure to keep myself well away from the forums, and did not touch the forums until around early 2010. By then, I was quite alright at the game, and wanted to make more friends.

I got membership for the first time, and discovered several fun minigames such as Stealing Creation, Castle Wars, & Soul Wars, etc. It was quite annoying trying to remember which friends chats/clans did each one, and where to join to be apart of such events. I noticed there was no list on the forums or any fansite which annoyed me a lot. After several months of camping those areas, I made my own list of friends chats/clans to record and kept it on my computer for whenever I needed it. If I'm remembering correctly, there was a new forum update/reskin in 2011 (?), and I thought I might as well share my list of FCs on the forums so everyone can benefit from it, in case there was anyone else who was annoyed at trying to find groups to play with.

It was then onwards, I got really involved with the minigames/D&Ds community, and made a lot of new friends, some of which I still talk to, to this day and have met in person! I'd have to say 2010-2015 was the best times for me on the forums, then it all came crumbling down one day, but I won't say anymore of that as I know it'll get this post hidden. ;) All I'll say, is it made me go silent on the forums and in-game for around a year and a half.

I slowly started to return to the forums, and turning my PM back on in-game, and the forums had changed quite a bit - activity wise. Unfortunately, this was due to a previous Community CM JMod (will not name who, but it's pretty obvious) who started using Reddit a lot and actively advocated to making Reddit active with the Runescape community (he later admitted after leaving Jagex, he wishes he didn't drive activity away from the forums, but damage already done).

Social Media was taking over (due to basically 0 restrictions on posting things there), and Jagex was sharing news in so many different places, it was very hard to keep track. It got a point where I started to wonder, "Why is Jagex not posting these things on the forums?", there's still an active community here who is missing out, so I then decided to create the Social Media News thread, which initially did get some backlash from a JMod (due to some wording in the OP about Jagex' lack of using the forums), so I stopped it after a two months. Two or so months went by, and I started having people message me in-game and on Discord asking why I stopped the thread, and that they really liked not having to go around searching for things, so I then reworked the thread, and restarted it up and have continued to updated it to this day.

Since then, I have moved from Australia to the United Kingdom for work related reasons, and have not had nearly as much time on the forums (or in-game) as I would like, but I do poke my head around in a few subforums still. ;)

Oh man.. it's been like 2 years since I've even found a reason to re-post on the RSOF -- until now :P ! What a great discussion you've created here, mister Nick (my name, too! WOW!!) It's been fun reading alot of the posts and being taken to a blast from ze past.

I think my first post was maybe around 06? Idek. I was pretty young. Probly' to the sorts of how many of us grew up with the RSOF to the extent of trying to reaching out to the game devs due to either getting scammed.. because braindead, or typing our password in wrongly thinking it was Jagex's fault! Lol.

Fast forward to 2009, after growing up with these Forums, learning how to better and more properly communicate with others not only over the interwebz but in real life, too; Mod Calm (CM at the time) threw me a FMOD invite, to my surprise.. in which of course, I graciously accepted. It felt great being recognized for my genuine helpfulness(?)/willingness to help ze noobs on the RSOF.

Fast forward a year later to like 2010, like a couple other FMODs at the time, we didn't really like the way the community was behaving and Jagex's lack of communication with us on alot of issues as still players, even we faced. Unfortunately, as like a 17 year old teenager, I then had the mentality of if you can't beat em', join em'! This was in the misconstrued hopes to better win the player's support on Jagex's behalf, to maybe make the company look better all whilst still voicing my own opinions but in a less than Modly effort? Idk.

Soon after, I was demoted. To be fair, I was given warning to rather Moderate more-so than advocate for a loud, irrational minority... in which, I dismissed the warnings by my own wrongdoing. For years I told myself I wasn't in the wrong.

All in all, it was a great experience and even to this day, due to the lack of activity the RSOF sees nowadays, I still anonymously view it and enjoy seeing the remaining few, veterans and newbies, coming together and finding a family of strangers.

I feel bad for those lost due to instances like you mention.
I had the opposite problem. Seven outright refused my resignation. I tried to resign my mod accounts. I was told no.

That's when I pretty much said "fuck it..." and stopped caring what Jagex wanted or thought of me.

So yeah, to any of you out there, Kari, other JMods, or anyone on the CM team, you wonder why I sometimes have a chip on my shoulder?

I don't belong to you.

You will never own me.

You can't control me.

Just enjoy me. :)

Now have a kitten:
I'm better than you, but that doesn't mean you're not great! :)

Jagex and the players used to be close, there was a Jagex Lite forum more than a decade ago where Jmods were encouraged to directly communicate with players - both for semi-serious issues and random light bantering.

You are a hero of RSOF, for voluntarily bridging the news from Social Media to RSOF for many years now, a job that Jagex employees should be doing in the first place. The communication gap between Jmods and forumers is narrowing for years now due to your efforts, the heroic effort of a regular player.

You are the undisputed record holder of the most number of sticky threads by a single player. Our team is always looking forward at the start of the month for us to sticky your News thread, for the benefit of the non-social media Runescapers. It became a monthly routine for us, mind you. We cannot thank you enough Loki.

I think I remember seeing this and posting a couple of times, but I was mostly a lurker then!

Thank you for the kind words also, it's highly appreciated! The forum community has helped me so much, in-game and personally in real life, so I'm more than happy to return the favour in other ways. ^_^

As for the sticky thread record, surely there's been more active forumers since the opening of the forums back in 2003 (?) - I'm sure Tuffty or Tranq have had more over the years? I could be wrong lol. From my count off the top of my head, over two accounts, I've had 54 so far. There might be more I'm not remembering, I don't know... :P

Probably a lot of things haven't been said by people who chose to bite their tongue

It was certainly different times back then, for sure :P .
