Oh man, a thread about the good old days. My bread and butter. I came to the forums back at the start of the golden age in 2008. I had what I would now figure to be a suggestion about some improvement I wanted to make and by what you might call random chance, bad luck, or providence, I chose to post in Rants. My thread was instantly swarmed with trolls and I was baffled at the negative response to my suggestions to improve the game. I was also hooked on the Wild West feel of it all. Even twelve years later I can count on one hand the times I’ve posted outside of Rants (this being one), not counting the raids into Jagex Lite
I loved the crazy feel of it all. Forum mods passed out bans (I was on the receiving end of many), but for the most part couldn’t do much to regulate the Spam Bin. I have fond memories of the player-run chat lounge, the three or four different factions that had a great time bickering about the fate of Rants, and the countless silly threads grading people on how famous they were in the forum or asking them trivia questions.
To be honest I miss it all. The sense of community, the fun, the chaos of it all. I’ve tried to quit the forums more times than I can count but something always brings me back. I have one thread left in Rants that I love dearly but every few months when I check on it I can’t help but hope “today’s the day Rants has been busy enough to send it to Chewie.” I always hope that I’ll log on and be back in the days where a thread spending five minutes on the front page was a badge of honour and if you got forum banned for more than a day you had to ask a friend to bump your threads until you got back.
I always hope, but deep down I know the landscape’s changed. Not just Rants, not just the forums, not even Runescape, but the whole internet. I’d love to relive the glory days, but I know I’m just an old Ranter past his prime, dreaming of the glory days.
But all the same, thanks for the memories. Cheers to nostalgia.
