I realized the other day that the RSOF is quite literally my social media.

I don't use any other websites on a daily basis aside from Youtube which is just my music player.

I come here to talk to other people and to seek interesting thoughts.

It is certainly already frustrating enough that the site really doesn't get very much activity. You're almost guaranteed to be interacting with the same 12 or so others 99% of the time.

But to make things worse (in my opinion) an unhealthy portion of threads on the first page haven't had any new thoughts added in months but keep being pushed to the front.

I believe that the reason people compulsively bump their threads likely stems from a few reasons:

1) They spent a lot of time in the thread and don't want to let it go

2) They have made a suggestion which has not happened in game and they hope someday it might if they keep prodding the devs

3) They want more input and so gamble on someone new browsing the forums who might read their thread

Personally I believe that if the amount of time my thread naturally spent on page 1 when I created it wasn't enough to get noticed by the devs or other players to comment, then it wasn't a good enough idea and I need to make improvements.

Plus, unless I'm really unique here, I recognise a thread that has been on page 1 for 6 months. I'm really really unlikely to go and read it a 2nd time to see if the OP updated anything. I'll read the last page if there are recent replies but that's it. As such I really don't think this endless bumping is even doing the thread any major favours or increasing visibility.

I think if you are convinced you have a good suggestion and it just isn't being noticed, it's better to post a new thread with your new thoughts every three to six months rather than just bump forever and ever.

If you really feel the need then copy the threads that are really important to you into google documents or onto your computer so you don't lose them.

I'm not saying that the ideas presented in these threads are bad.

I'm not making any kind of claim about their quality. If anything I would say the threads which receive this treatment are very well made. But it doesn't change how dull and repetitive it is to see them on the first page with no new replies week after week.

I used to bump threads that had great ideas, but after you realize the gamming industry's standing in this age of time of only doing the cheapest things to lower dev time for overall more money, you give up.

They don't care for what us players want anymore, they just lie and ignore our posts, after an update, 3 weeks pass, all the forum mods are allowed to close your threads in recent/move it to "Rants" which jagex doesn't read, if they read any of them lol.

Also a lot of people on these forums are biased to other playstyles.

Also if you don't 'bump' threads often, your thread gets deemed by forum mods as 'grave bumping' and is locked lol.....

Activists like myself are building a massive legal case against the companies atm......i think it has gone too far, they can't win. legal system is also on the lawsuit list as being corruptionist rulings for all current policies that allowed these issues to continue for greed.

To fix a problem, you must find the 'root' of the reason why it happened, i did all that :P

^only way i found to fix this issue. It's not profitable for them to fix it, so they won't....but they should.....

Well for starters, they never have told players when they decided to use an idea.

With the exception of their contests which explicitly gave credit to the players who won.

Under normal circumstances, you don't even get any feedback from them about your idea. I don't think I've ever seen it.

By using this hands off approach, they can use the ideas we put up and they aren't beholden to anyone.

By and large I do think they don't use a very large number of our ideas, but that's fine. It's their game. If they don't like our ideas, they don't have to use them.

However from my personal experience, I have felt like they did read my thread when something very similar to it popped up in game. It's happened at least a couple of times to me that I felt, "hey now, that is uncannily familiar to something I said on the forums!" But they would never tell me they used my idea, nor should they have to.

As such I think you might be a bit too blackpilled about the whole situation.

Even if the corporate overlords do their best to keep excess expenditures in check, the devs are real people and do have real imaginations, feelings, inspiration, etc. I think it's not only possible but I think it definitely happens that they become inspired sometimes from reading the forums and end up making something into the game which came originally as a player suggestion. But it also would be completely unsuprising if such cases normally involved many iterations and modifications to the original idea. And why shouldn't it?

Anyway I do appreciate your input and response. Hopefully your creativity and suggestions have at least been somewhat meaningful to you personally even if you feel they have been ignored.

You're suing...the legal system ?

Yeah. Okay there.

I can't wait to see how this plays out.

Guilty of bumping here, I did try to limit it to once a day though and it is mostly for the reasons you mentioned. Another reason would have been when the front page got spammed by people wanting to ‘break’ the forums or if someone lagged and submitted one thread several times.

If you remember the clan owned ports thread it was that one, I did try to keep it interesting with new stuff and replying to people who did post.

I’ve also seen mine and other peoples ideas get implemented so it’s not as if the devs don’t read the forums. Waterfall fishing came from another players suggestion in the ‘New game content forums’. We also saw a string of f2p improvements come from the forums.

At the same time devs might see an idea and take it in a different direction, Terrorbird mounts for example.

I suppose the bumping I did was a tad selfish, but it’s purely down to wanting to make the game more enjoyable, with some new ideas that the devs may not have considered.
Check out Thieves guild layout redesign. Happy ‘scaping

Are threads already on page 1 not supposed to be bumped? I don't know but I never bump a thread when it is already on page 1 and even if it is not on page 1, I won't bump it everyday.

Perhaps RSOF should set a consistent guideline on thread bumping, but in general I think free speech and expression means rights for everybody to express their opinions given all forum rules are met.

What is it nowadays - every 15, 30, 60 minutes to bump a personal thread? Perhaps this could be increased? Yet, that would mean digging back into the RSOF code which seems to already be lackluster by a decade or so already :P . iirc, Mod Kalaya was the last one (seemingly long ago departed) to put forth some noticeable effort into pushing the RSOF more up to speed.

Nowadays, the new-age employees are seemingly more focused on their own pages (i.e. Reddit, Twitter, IG, etc.) than engaging on this dinosaur of a platform :( . Then again, perhaps that's been their directive all along and this is solely just our ( the same 12's ) sandbox of boredom whilst we AFK in-game braindead skills. lol. Ah well.

There are lots of threads still on the first page after days, putting a 15, 30 or 60 minute no-bumping timer won't mean a thing. If Jagex are going to make an supposedly easy coding change, they may better go by position of the thread to be bumped. No bumping for posts on first page regardless when was it last touched will be more appropriate.
