So with the forums being removed will the website still exist like can we change passwords make new accounts look up hiscores and see game update posts on mainpage?

None of that is going anywhere - its just the forums that are being removed.

As for the photobooth, that should be staying too - your avatar picture is also shown on your RuneMetrics profile and other areas around the site. :)

It's a good question.

These forums, by comparison, seem to be very low upkeep to other areas of the site. The evidence for this is two part: firstly, the forum pages load much quicker than other pages, such as RuneMetrics and the Clan Area; and secondly, the forums have been running with nigh on zero involvement from Jagex for years, therefore why are we getting the final nails in the coffin now?

So if the forums are going, what will follow? Will we see the loss of the clan area since clans now use Discord for chat and recruitment? Will the Grand Exchange database be removed now that players rely on sites like ely.gg for more accurate street prices? Will Solomon's Store be finally removed and/or incorporated into the game? Will the hiscores be removed since nobody bothers with them two weeks after a new skill comes out anyway? Do we even need the newsfeed now, since Jagex have openly admitted that they would rather give news out over other platforms.

I wouldn't be surprised that, by the end of the year, the only thing to be found on www.runescape.com is a big button in the middle of the page saying "
download now
".

It would be a terrible business decision in my eyes, but it looks like Jagex are going all in on the social media revolution.

^ Don't be silly. It will be a small button saying ''download now'' and a big button saying ''Buy your Treasure Hunter keys here''
The evolution of RuneScape:

One day, there won't even be a "download now" button. All that exists will be a "Buy your Treasure Hunter keys here" button.

Somehow Jagex have done it. Somehow Jagex have infiltrated your life and are getting you to buy keys for a game you don't even play.

The removal of the forums just seems like yet another addition to the chain of bad ideas they've been making. Their explanation for removing death costs and the size of the GE tax was utterly abysmal and ended up worsening the inflation problems they claimed to be trying to fix with it. Then they tried to replace daily challenges with hero pass, adding more daily grind when they were allegedly trying to reduce it. The pumpkin parties were terrible and they lied about the christmas TH promo. Now they tell us they're removing the forums during the anniversary celebration. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to remove minigames for easter.

I know people have been claiming it for years but a recurring string of bad decisions like this could end up killing the game and even if it doesn't, it'll be much worse than it was before. The forums is one of many features that's only in the state it's currently in because of neglect. If they actually bothered to give it some QoL updates players have been giving feedback about for years, it'd become more active again. If they remove it because they can't be bothered to do that, what does that mean for other major parts of RS that have been neglected?

They're not even putting this to a vote or asking players how they feel about it. What happened to listening to player feedback to improve the game experience?

Just wanted to add my two cents to the points highlighted.

Firstly, I have not seen any evidence that inflation has gotten worse since this change. I have read what you have said elsewhere on this topic, and as I don't want to take this thread off-topic I will leave it with agreeing to disagree.

Secondly, for me, the Hero Pass greatly reduced the amount of daily grind compared to Daily Challenges. I know the Hero Pass came into a lot of grief for the initial Pay-to-Win aspect, but once that was removed, it was actually a good product compared to Daily Challenges and Yak Track. For me, the Hero Pass was a good update - eventually.

I also found the pumpkin parties to be relatively good. The only downside was that there was no limit on how many pumpkins could be squished. If it behaved like the balloon drops on the RS birthdays, I wouldn't have had FOMO and wouldn't have had to attend each event.

As for the Xmas TH promo, they didn't lie per se. Indeed, they were not fully clear on what was going to happen, but if it was planned then they could not have said anything up front because players would then just hold out on spending for keys. If it was unplanned, they probably thought they were doing something good for us.

However, what seems to be a common thread amongst the things you have talked about is the quality of the communication from Jagex.

As you say, we have been told about the removal of the forums during what should have been a celebration. We were told about it on a Friday afternoon, a time right before Jagex staff clock out for the week. And we were told about it in a matter of fact way that this is happening and there is nothing you can do about it.

It appears the reason is that they don't want to write code for a new forum on the new language the website will be based on. This would seem a very reasonable reason to me.

What I don't understand is why they didn't say that in the newsfeed. It would help us understand Jagex's motives at the very least, and would very much help us come to terms with what they are doing.

The way they have announced it makes it look like they haven't considered other options, such as leaving the forums as they are (and have done for the past 5 years) as this would take no Jagex involvement. I have to assume that this has been considered in order to move on. Otherwise, if it is an option, I'll be messaging Jmods every day on every other social media site until the forums are reinstated.

Changing a promo in ways that differ from what they presented is false advertising. They manipulated players into spending their keys in ways that would differ if they'd been accurately informed that Santa's Grotto would turn into Imp's Grotto. The people with those keys paid money for them, whether through direct purchases or members bonuses. You can't trust predatory MTX. They knew.

The pumpkin parties had a lot of performance issues as well as problems with the places they took place in. The way they were set up also meant they could fail from world hopping or players could lose out from it ending so fast if they were lagging too much or couldn't show up early enough. Probably my worst holiday event experience.

I won't go into detail since I have a whole thread about it but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that if most gp is directly or indirectly generated by PvM and an update is geared to increase PvM by removing their main sink, that's going to increase gp generation. It's been a while but they commented on it on one of the streams.

Challenges are quick and easy, especially if you toggle skills based on what you're up for doing. The skips help when you're not up for more than logging in for a few minutes. Hero Pass was so grindy they had to reduce the time it took to do them. The weeklies were especially awful since you couldn't toggle the skills and could get things like bury 3K bones, no skips. And RIP F2P who got ones they literally couldn't do, cutting down on how many points they could earn. It was pretty bad even by the end.
