Actually it was directing you to a FAKE page designed to look exactly the forums. That's how phishing works.

it asking for the authenticator is what threw me off, and that it lead to the runescape forums here, with the Mod Sarnie approval, obviously seemed legit to someone dumb like me. idk who mod sarnie is or how to view actual moderators? and it being on a forum just seemed that it would be a sorta, legit? way to do a giveaway, if they so wanted to do one.
Before you click a link, hover over it to see the URL it will send you to. If it has a load of gobbledegook or does not match exactly the official websites you know about, then it's almost certainly a scam. If you do not recognise the site, do not click on the link.

The safest way to see if something like this is real is to come to the real official site, like you have to post this thread, then search for the giveaway thread in question. If you cannot find it here, it's most certainly not going to be real.

Also, before typing in your RS password and authenticator code, make sure there is a locked padlock in the URL address bar. If this isn't there, you are on a fake, replica website designed to steal your login credentials.

hi guys. so, i know that. those advertising sites on GE are not safe. but i wanted to take the bait to see if i get lucky. i saw one adversiting to go check youtube for a few-lettered name&numbers (like [Edited] for example,) for a couple of 100k...
The OP strongly manifested that the OP was 'prepared to play the odds' however became surprised in what kind of rollercoaster he/she came to be.

It is easy to check if a 'moderator (JMod)' does exist or not.
Type in your adress-bar of your browser
Mod Sarnie
and see what search-results do come to surface.
STILL ...
this does not say nor imply that said JMod, is responsible nor involved in this 'hijack - phishing - scam', it only reflects that Jagex/JMods too are abused in this kind of Internet crime.

To check 'where am I' is this website legit or not?
This is also easy to check, '
Never ever log in, stay OFF-Line
' open a new tab or browser-screen and type in your address-bar
RuneScape
, see what happens in that address-bar, compare it with the 'wonky-link' that fused your curiousity. Hit after comparing 'enter' and see where you are taken to and what the difference is.

Never log in, never do log in as there's no need to.

Do you want to be 1000% sure that you login in into The RuneScape Official Website/Forums.

Login into
RuneScape
and while being in the
Lobby
, click on one of the available-links which automatically opens The RuneScape Official Website/Forums for you and 'you do not need manually login yourself' as your RuneScape-login already has doen that for you.

The advice I gave above was from the point of view of a RuneScape 3 player.

Going to attempt to walk the same avenue as an OldSchool RuneScape player there's no link available that automatically opens The RuneScape Official Website/Forums to prevent you from having to manually login yourself.

Thus as an OldSchool RuneScape player it still/always remains eyes open at all times and check your address-bar where you're linked to.
