Many moons ago, we were told that there were plans for a website redesign which would include the much requested updates to the forums we've all been waiting for.

Understandably, there are many elements to the website, and getting an overhaul right would take time and much resource. However, it has been many years since we heard of this plan and very little has changed in that time.

Now that Jagex Accounts have been set up, can we assume that work on the website and forums will commence soon?

Is there an approximate date on when we may see a completed update, or are we more likely to see updates being drip fed over time?

Here's hoping we don't end up with something that looks like Reddit!

You must be new

Once the project that prevents work being done to the forums is finished there will be another project started that prevents work being done to the forums

Repeat until forums removed.

Well not sure about the until forums removed part. However the first half of that post makes alot of sense.

The forums are akin to the shoemakers kids. They're so busy pleasing everyone else with their work that by the time the days over there's no energy for making their own kids something nice.

I do not believe that we'll get those updates. With Social Media running rampant, the Forums have long been forgotten. It gives Jagex access to a wider audience. The Forums, unfortunately, do not have that ability. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jagex Moderators -- with the exception of a few -- could not use their J-Mod accounts outside of Jagex HQ, which is a limitation that's non-existent with Social Media. JMods can interact with the public from their phones.

In any case, this is the latest that we have from Mod Lyon, who's part (or was, not sure if he's still there) of Jagex Web Team:

Hey [name removed],

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Some new and not so new suggestions there.

I think there are some we're more likely to think about than others, I don't feel the "active users now" is accurate and just leads to some of our users misunderstanding because of it, for example so we'd leave any further activity monitor our of updates and frankly probably get rid of the existing one. It doesn't add much value.

Notifications on the other hand, definitely a must have from the community minded JMods if we had free reign over these updates.

Like [name removed] shared, the forums aren't [regrettably] our current priority, and we're working hard on some big development sized work at the moment. I'll keep your thread on our community suggestions notes though and relay this to the rest of the team, if we manage to get round to updating these hallowed halls .

Thanks,
Mod Lyon

It's clear that social media is a powerful tool for game makers to connect to their audience.

However, Jagex have a full website at our disposal alongside their fully online game. It's not merely about connecting to the audience via the website. It's about the in-game link up to the wider community.

We have access to the wiki via the game. When are we going to get notifications in-game about our forum threads?

When are we going to get notifications about price changes on tagged items in the Grand Exchange?

When are J-mods going to be allowed access to the website when working from home?

There is a lot of potential here, and not all of it can be satisfied with Discord and Reddit.

The wiki just directs you to the wiki...that's different than having the game pull data from the website, which it doesn't do that often as it is. Such as, you only get inbox notifications once you log in and not a live ping.

It would be far easier to just develop a thread subscription system that can plop a notice on the forums themselves. Can probably even tie it into the browser's desktop notification tools as well...depending how it's developed.

Otherwise you'll have to have the game pinging the website A LOT more than it should.

They already have it...most jmods work from home, so they need access to their tools to do their jobs. Since most jmods work from home now or in a hybrid format (all job postings in the past 2 years have been remote or hybrid), there's literally no reason why none of them don't use the forums any.

The whole social media lets them post outside of work was just an excuse imo. Aside from a few, none of the Jmods used their socials outside of work hours, so it was all just reasons to not touch the forums. There was even a reddit post a few years ago where a jmod openly said they don't use reddit outside work.

I agree that socials are a powerful tool to use to reach people, but you cannot isolate 1 platform in favor of another, they all have to be use. Else you just get a fraction of communications, and the diversity of opinion shrinks to what the platform of choice favors.

@ana, Lyon is still on the web team
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

That has been the norm since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Ever since I have been here, J-Mods were presumably not allowed to log into their Jagex Moderator accounts outside of Jagex's HQ, for security purposes. Now, as YtHaar-Mej mentioned above, as of this precise moment, all of their job openings are either fully hybrid or remote .
