I absolutely hate Discord, X, and Reddit, but I guess that's what the kids use nowadays. I didn't mind using the forums sparingly for some discussion and some support for Linux users, but this was the only place I was willing to talk RS.

Anecdotal evidence or whatever, but I felt these forums was the last central place I could find mature RS discussions. I don't care for memes, short-answers, nor snark. I'm not going to those places just for RS, so without any central community to go to I'll feel RS will become even more lonely than I was dealing with before. This was the one place I could turn to for community RS discussions!

I don't like the communities that those 3 places cultivate. I particularly don't like Discord's walled-garden (any and all discussions are locked behind Discord), X's what-they-really-mean-by-free-speech bologna, and the general Redditor attitude. If that's what socializing is online nowadays, then no thanks.

Edit: On a second thought I figured this could be a good chance to try to adapt and try those platforms again, but they really don't replace a forum. Discord is only meant for fast-moving chat. X is eh and there's no centralized way to even discuss RS. Reddit is ok for on-the-day discussions if your post is interesting (and of course edgy to attract that interest). I just don't see those platforms being viable for me even outside of RS, but I do appreciate Reddit for not being walled-off and hope Jmods use that for important info.

I've noticed I get drawn-into general negativity and edge when on Reddit and X, and realize I'm better just not using those platforms. Discord is just too-much for the basic chat I want to use it for; hell it felt like I was reading a full EULA just getting into the RS/OSRS Discords with having to click and jump to different sections of rules. If I'm still interested in RS after my sub ends, I guess I'll just find some fan forum.

I'm totally with you on this.

It's not like I haven't tried Discord and Reddit. I've got logins for both and literally never use them because I don't like them at all. I've never used X and never will. On them all, there are far too many immature people who think it's acceptable to say anything to anyone. At least on RS forums we have mods that do stop the worst culprits.

It seems that the older players are being ignored by Jagex again. While I understand that they want to get new players, new doesn't necessarily mean young and a lot of older gamers will be put off by 'having' to use social media that they feel uncomfortable using.

It's not like I'm not technical. My job was as an information and systems analyst. I understand systems and I know how they work, it's just that social media isn't for me.

I think Jagex will come to regret this action but it will be too late.

Same. X is for politics and crypto shitposting. Discord is great as a group chat but apples to oranges with the forums. I refuse to use Reddit. I'm active on FB but it's also more akin to short term conversations and texting, and Jagex really isn't active there.

This decision was

A: Made with little to no thought by newer execs.
B: Made as a means to hide the reality of the game from shareholders / potential buyers.

Should the forums truly go; almost anyone from here is free to add me in-game.

Absolutely agree with OP.

I'm active on a wide range of social media platforms (X/Twitter, Discord, Mastodon, BlueSky, Facebook, Threads and several others - far more, in fact, than Jagex are present on), and none of them offer a venue for mature discussion about anything in game.

I can relate to what the OP is feeling. Though generalising has to be done with care, Discord/Reddit v forums does have that feeling of a young v old divide. I do use Discord, but it is a very different arena and the norms of communication there are very different from the forums. Topics get lost in long streams of chat. Long, thoughtful posts like this in a large fast-moving Discord server, would only be read by the few people who happen to be online at that time and those in other time zones probably wouldn't even see it. But things are changing, whether we like it or not. The younger generation is used to brief and instant. A carefully considered debate that remains accessible for all who are interested to comment, isn't the name of the game now it seems. I too shall miss the mature conversations on these forums. It's a shame the changes can't incorporate platforms that both the younger and older generations of players are comfortable with. The risk Jagex is taking in this decision, is alienating and losing their older players by not making accommodation for them. Sad times. Good bye forums. We will remember you with fondness! :(

Another forum board bites the dust, so sad :(

I can never follow anything on what's happening on discord, hard to keep track of conversations.

Social media channels have toxic comments and are filled with bot posts.

I hope one day forums make a comeback again.

Your never too old for Runescape ,
just not young enought to deal with twentieangers (young ones) socail media stuff.
There is alot of 'senior ' players still here after the children have left the game for other 'modern 'games

We dont have the need to comment or 'like everything that is said , hense alot of us read forums without logging in , just browsing .

Please jagex listen to your more mature " senior, old , grumpy"long term players and keep forums alive for a bit longer ...

I kind of wish P_O-houses were visible on the streets of Yanille or Prif, so I could stand in my garden and say "get off my lawn!"

All kinds of people are being ignored in this mess, but "old" is as easy to label as young, or anything else.

I'm not too old to play, but I'm definitely too old to put up with some of the downsides civilly, lol.

Do these other places that monetize your personal info and clicks have a GOML emoji? ;)
