Absolutely agree with OP.

I'm active on a wide range of social media platforms (X/Twitter, Discord, Mastodon, BlueSky, Facebook, Threads and several others - far more, in fact, than Jagex are present on), and none of them offer a venue for mature discussion about anything in game.

I soft quit RS in 2011 hard quit 2016 returned 2022.

Very active on FB, Discord always open for a few other groups. I'm still using the RS forums. Sometimes I go elsewhere first, sometimes I come here first. It's like cars. In clear weather you have a fast sports car, blizzards you bring out the big truck. One isn't inferior to the other just because it may be used more in certain situations.

I do not identify as "old". I prefer "experienced" or "veteran player".

Having said that, yeah I agree with this thread's point. Jagex is definitely chasing after the kiddos while running away from those of us who have been here for a long time. In spite of the disturbing imagery that might conjure, I can understand why Jagex would look for new players on newer platforms. However, doing so at the expense of their longtime, dedicated playerbase is absolutely idiotic - especially when you consider how many of these short attention span kids are likely to briefly try RS, only to leave once the next hot gaming app shows up on their phones. Where does that then leave Jagex?

Attracting new players is nice. Keeping them is even better.

Gaining temporary players to replace permanent ones is not going to be good for any game long-term. After several recent disappointing actions taken by this company, I have serious doubts about their capacity to make smart choices.

Truth be told, my motivation to continue with this game was already at an all-time low. One of the few aspects I still enjoyed has been the RSOF.

The EXIT sign above the door is looking very enticing now.

I have discord for my clan and a couple small groups. Im not a fan of social media, I've witnessed the negative impacts it's had on the population and I want zero part in it. I cant keep up with discussion in big servers, and the notifications would make me mute the server. At that point, why be in it. Linear chat is horrendous for discussion, and live chat makes it very hard to actually THINK out a response and post. Someone posts with something to reply to, and you're still typing a response with 2 others pending to be written too...

I have FB, but restricted to contacting certain people irl, and used for scouting groups.

Twitter I have to follow news in our school district, I dont post. I used to have an RS twitter, and then obliterated it a while later after realizing the annoyances of social platforms.

I don't use any of the other platforms really. Definitely not Reddit....the way it's designed is bad.

Not to mention, I'm in the age group that should be so thrilled to be having Jagex use all the popular platforms of this 5 year web-period.

Idk why it has to be so black and white, forums or everything else. Properly done, all platforms can be used and players use the one they're most comfortable with. Im not comfortable engaging on social media....If people threw a fuss about having to use the forums, and so they didnt have to, why must people who use the forums be forced to use platforms they dont want to? Makes no sense why it's a 1 way view. People have always been off the forums, fansites were the big thing 2006 - 2010....no one magically up and left b/c social media....fragmentation has always been here and players used the ones they wanted.

Here, I can process posts, process replies, have a proper discussion. I agree with others, that cannot properly be done elsewhere.

I get removing the webscript modules as there's no one that can maintain them or fix if anything breaks...plus new website. But there's options other than full removal....
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

The thoughts posted in this thread are identical to mine.

Thank you all for contributing. Long live the forums.

My boss okay'd me to be in and out of the break room on the day(s) the forums close so that I can be present for it and keep a couple threads safe from being spammed out. Not sure she ever heard of RS or the forums but recognized it as something important to me. I really hope that request will be deemed unnecessary and Jagex will re-evaluate the decision.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet / I've lost track of all the arguments I've read in favor of the forums, but using social media as an alternative is arguably dangerous.

On the forums you see the person's RS screen name. Nothing else unless they use the same name in other places. If Jagex closes the forums and someone wants to share feedback about the game or has an issue they can't solve themselves they will have to either create a fake profile on another website or risk their personal life / outside-RS activity being followed. Not an issue for me personally but I have a few friends on RS who maintain a dense wall between their RS avatars and their presence elsewhere in life.

Yt-Haar Mej, well-said.

As to "why must people who use the forums be forced to use platforms they dont want to? Makes no sense why it's a 1 way view.", I can think of a lot of things over the past few years where one part of the player base got what they clamored for, and the rest basically were told to either get with the program or quit.

It made little sense for any of those things, just as this makes no real sense now.

(even though here in this nonlinear game, we may choose our own course, and play as we wish!!!!11!!!!!TM)

This. I couldn't have said it any better.

Yea, the RuneScape Forums weren't as active as they once were with over 1,000 active users at any given time, but it allowed clans and other faithful community members to participate. I wholeheartedly believe that getting rid of them is a mistake and the action should be reversed.

I think it's brilliant the game has a good presence on some social media. Seems like a great way to share announcements/images/videos and info on the go.

However, it's too bad that the Forums need to be left behind. I am still figuring out where I would go for more detailed/meaningful discussions.
