So when we first move in I pay $1000 for rent/fees and my roommate didn't hit me up for his 1/3 of the rent until 3 WEEKS later. When it comes time to pay rent again I'm completely busy and my roommate isn't so he says ok I'll pay the rent put the money in bank account. I figured I'd wait a week or two like he made me wait or AT LEAST until he asked me about it once or twice.

so 9 days later I haven't heard from him, assuming he paid the rent. NOPE HE DIDN'T pay the rent 9 days late they charge a $50 late fee. He never told me he needed money or that he didn't pay it and expects me to cover this late fee with him

NOPE

NOPE

WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?

It's not that $50 is anything to me, it's the principle that he doesn't care enough to talk to me BEFORE the rent is late

TBH, that's what you have to deal with taking in a roommate. It is also just as much your fault for the late fee as it is hes. You both share the responsibility to check that the rent was paid in full and on time. Waiting the 9 days is your own fault.

and as to what i would do, is consider a new roommate, or a new place you can afford on your own. Or be ready to pay full months rent at any given time as it seams ur current one is unreliable

Taking in all opinions. Let me have it, but when I cover rent the 1st month straight out of my pocket and get his 1/3 of the rent 3 WEEKS later... and then he tells me he'll cover this month's rent and to just put my share of the rent in his bank account, I'm going to assume he'll take care of it like an adult not wait until it's late.

TBH, I'll get evicted before I pay whatever the late fee is. This is his mistake, and he should pay for it. It's not about the money at all here. It's a matter of principle and I will sooner give my money away or burn it before I gave it to him.

I would also like to note, we already have a way to avoid this problem in all future rent payments. I also don't see how getting a new roommate will help and atm, I do NEED a roommate to pay the bills. That's the college life. Getting a new roommate will come with new problems, or the same problems... either way, no.

then get rid of your roommate then, if you don't need his half to cover bills why let them freeload.

and did you both sign the lease? if he did then you cna take him to court if what he owes gets out of hand

also your landlord doesn't care that you paid 1st months rent all they care is that on the date rent is due they have money in hand. Once again that is the problems of a roommate, unless its in writing who covers what(and even then could be screwed over). bills have to be paid and just because, someone can't cover their half, the bill is halved you still need to pay that full amount. If you want to be the more responsible one then you gotta step up and pay it all.

And if you don't want to do that and get evicted in all honstley, your just as bad as your roomate

I don't think you're fully grasping the situation, but it's probably because I'm laying out the facts in the form of a rant.

Fact is, I'm going to have a roommate one way or another. So your suggestions to ditch the roommate simply won't happen, and I already said finding a new one will bring new problems..

We both share a lease, and we've both signed. I took care of the first months rent and my roommate paid me back his share of the rent 3 weeks later. I have to share an apartment unit with this guy, so when he tells me he's going to pay the rent I shouldn't have to babysit him, I'm not his mom.

I think you're not understanding that I'm not going to be homeless nor am I in need or in debt, this is a rant. The fucktard should grow up and do what he says he's going to do. Luckily, I only require ONE lesson to learn from this.

Future rent will be paid without issue from now on. Guaranteed. This is a rant about this one time event, and because of this event, there will no longer be an issue because I'll be handling it.

That late fee is on him though.

if it don't happen again then that's great.

and trust me i get what your saying about his half and that in this situation he should cover the late fee.

but I'm saying is in case if it happens again, and again.

Also for what I'm saying look at it the other way. If you were the landord and money is owed to you

I've been a landlord before, and not saying your story is not true or anything, But i have heard many stories, and tbh they don't mean shit(maybe in case extreme emergency death etc)

When it comes to first of month i want my money, you both singed the lease. in my case i always take 1 check if i have 2+ renters for same apt. i don't go, ohh rent was $800 you gave me $400 so I'm gonna go after just the other renter. no i would evict both of you if it came to it. i jsut want my money

so thats kinda what i mean by standing up and paying the full amount

and maybe im missing why you "have to" have a roommate, once again if it happens again and your screwed months on rent. why not move out? find a new place that you can afford on your own?

It will never happen again, for sure :) If you had my details and information you would know why. I just learned my lesson this time, that my roommate is a retard.

As for the apartments POV, oh of course. I'm taking no rants out on the landlord. They SHOULD charge a late fee and they DO have the right to collect it.

This was not a rant against my landlord, it was about my roommate. :)
