they caught up with the manga after the Kyoto Arc (which ended on ep. 62), and most of the remaining episodes' quality dropped significantly. Some of the episodes 1-27 also suffer from that a bit, but it's still nice to watch those to get to know the characters better.
I haven't watched much anime myself tbh (specially recently), so I guess it's better for others to make recommendations. One I would recommend, however, is Code Geass; talking of which: Nosword said :

Not sure how I feel about it. code geass was one of my favorite shows, and i think it had a great ending. i would really like to see more but at the same time it might ruin the ending of what we already have Yea I feel exactly the same.
