^You're wrong in both the short and the long run.

There's going to be a 2nd referendum anyway. 52% really shouldn't be enough.

Not defending the Brexit, but for Parliament to go against the wishes of the British people is political suicide.

Not in this case. 48% are against it + the Leave camp admitted to lying with that NHS "promise" which was immediately retracted after the final results of the referendum were spread.

I vote tory (I know, a crime), and I'd lose a little faith in any leader (can't really use Cameron as an example now) if they backed out on their referendum verdict even if, as it turns out it has, it goes against what I personally want.

The problem with that petition is that a 60% majority is difficult. 75% turnout is more likely, but still a bit hazy.

I actually don't like democracy. I've said that before on several threads. This just reaffirms my dislike for it.

Even if we'd voted to remain, I'd still have been unsatisfied that this went to an uneducated public vote. By which I don't mean factors such as intelligence, etc. I mean educated on the facts of leaving/staying. So many didn't know, and went along with ideologies they either were unsure about, or were misled by.

An encouragement of political engagement from an early age would partially solve this problem. I'd be more content knowing a politically astute and informed country were deciding my future, as opposed to potential vast numbers of donkey voters or poorly educated right/left wing extremists.

Unfortunately our biggest mistake is misleading people into thinking their opinion is as valued and important as anyone elses. It isn't; and shouldn't be this way in voting systems.

Having said that, it's sadly the form of government we live under, and nothing (for the time being) will change that fact. I'm not sure how this will run long term, no-one is, and anyone who professes to is lying, so I guess we have to suck it up.

I'm keeping the words 'told you so' very close to my chest, however.
you dont like democracy because your opinion didnt win : ^)

I sincerely hope that this is a wake up call to Europe. One thing both sides agreed on was that the EU needed reform, but for decades now, it has only gone in one, narrow minded direction. People have been suffering in different ways right across the continent but the leaders were arrogantly oblivious and just wanted to press on with their EU utopia dream. They now know that ignoring people's welfare has consequences. I believe that the world is too small for all nations to not work together, but the EU has proven to be a divisive system. Maybe now it will be finally be forced to change and develop a new political system that can actually work well, putting people above politics. I did fear for the future of both Britain and Europe, but now I have real cause for optimism.
