^ Is your CPU still operating at very high temperatures? If so, you are very likely throttling. Throttling is when your CPU clock speeds drop (significantly) in attempt to drop the temperatures down. A CPU running at high speeds generates more heat, so downclocking can reduce temps as it's not constantly running at high frequencies. This throttling behaviour causes FPS instability. Even if your clock speeds drop to 1.7GHz for a split second and then go back up, it's still a problem. You don't want the CPU alternating between a low and high speed. To keep high frames, you need a processor operating at high stable frequencies.

Unfortunately, to remove your lag, you will need to fix your temperature issue. Otherwise, your processor will continue to throttle down. In more severe cases, it will cause thermal shutdowns (where your PC just shuts off). This occurs if the first safeguard (throttling) against heat damage doesn't work.

You can use a monitoring tool such as "CPUID HWMonitor" (get the non-pro version) to monitor your temperatures and processor clock speeds.

Also even if I buy an i5 make my own comp vs another $1000 comp w/ monitor no matter what both way is still outdated ya?

Thinking a laptop may be better...

Took apart my comp for fun bc i thought it was 100% dead... found a wall of dust plug the heatsink...

When I load league I can keep 250 fps for about 10 mins then it goes down to the 10-15 back to 100 and back down thing... I think I need to replace the fan that is making a lot of noise... I think the 250 fps is a good sign that my inside of my comp is working just not my fan.

Can you download "CPUID HWMonitor" to see what your temperatures and clock speeds are at while running NXT? http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html - don't get the pro version. It has some limitations (displays "TRAIL" under some readings).

You will need to monitor the data until you suffer from an FPS drop. This is so we can identify what is causing the drops. Heating issues don't appear suddenly, they can take time to come to surface.

It is not advised to continue running your processor at such extreme temperatures. It degrades its lifespan significantly (the hotter it is). You want to keep temperatures as low as possible to lengthen its lifespan. Most feel comfortable running their CPU at temperatures below 75C.

A laptop is also not recommended unless you move around a lot. Laptops are known for having problems with heat due to their tight space and limited cooling options (can't have several additional case fans circulating air inside the chassis for example).

As long as the i5 is of a recent generation (6th or 7th), it's still relevant. Even processors of older generations are still able to keep up with today's demands. Intel have only made small leaps of performance boosts throughout their generations. It's nothing mind-boggling. The difference between a Skylake or Kaby Lake CPU is very small for example. An i5 6600K is the same as the i5 7600K if both are clocked at the same frequency.

I've been using the program. I only suffer FPS drops after 10 mins now (since i cleaned a wall of dust off the heatsink/fan) my fan makes a odd noise... and if i touch the vent it is rly hot but no air is blowing out. I can always start off with 260 fps on league consistently until the temp goes up.

I just ordered a new fan. I hope this is the problem.

What do you see under "clocks" for the processor when the FPS drops though? Does it alternate constantly between a low and high value? Does it suddenly drop from a high value and remain at a much higher value?

The reason why I am suggesting to pay attention to the clock speeds is because this will confirm whether or not the drops are caused by extreme heat. Heat itself does not cause performance degradation. Degradation occurs when the processor's safety mechanism kicks in which is called "throttling". The consistent drops in speed cause FPS instability. If the clock speeds are not dropping from their rated frequency (varies depending on the processor), then fixing temperatures isn't going to improve performance. All it'll do is increase longevity as lower temps allow your processor to operate for longer before complete failure.

A fan replacement MAY fix things if you've identified an issue with the cooler. However, you may need thermal paste re-application. Applying fresh thermal paste on the CPU will help drop temperatures if it's an issue with that. Paste is usually responsible for high temperatures unless it's evident your cooler has failed.

Yeah, then that is your issue. A fan replacement will fix it if it's not working. If the fan replacement doesn't help, you will need to re-apply thermal paste.

If you remove the heatsink, you will also need to apply thermal paste.

tbh I just ripped my fan out broke off the things keeping it together cleaned it put it together and it is blowing air again and my fps is returning. but the fan is vibrating my comp bc the motor is still messed up... so it should last until my replacement comes... ~God is a Poro~ NA Akali main ~Poro Lover~
