Hi guys, thanks for your responses!

I've reflected a little bit on the way I've written this thread, and I think the way I've constructed the opening post doesn't lead to discussions on the topic as interesting as they could be. I'd like to take some time to work out how to start a more open-ended and meaningful discussion on such a broad topic.

Thanks again for your responses, I'll try to write some responses for this thread, and also to create a new thread about the future of mass communication when I find time.

oboi, dis fred will be a long read

I value it above all else. Not to sound heartless, but even above suffering. I don't want others to suffer, but I subjectively view truth as worth it, no matter what.
Blasty said :
- How do you determine if something is "true"?

I don't think I ever can know 100%, but I believe I can know things, at least generally, through induction and deduction. So I don't think I can know when something is true, but with more and more reasoning/evidence, comes more and more certainty of it probably being true.

Generally, why do people lie?

To save face. It's a defense mechanism mostly, probably evolutionarily advantageous at one point.
Blasty said :
- How much of the information you hear and see would you consider to be truthful?

I'd say less than 50%, but I really don't know.
Blasty said :
- If you are exposed to misinformation, how do you handle it?

Decide if I care enough to argue with the person presenting it. Usually I don't care enough. But if the question was about me believing something false, and then finding it out to be false, then I try to forget my biases and change my view.
Blasty said :
- How do you know that what you believe to be misinformation is in fact misinformation?

If it goes against what I have reasonably concluded to be true or most likely true. Also, looking up the alleged misinformation to see if the argument/evidence holds up.

I don't think so. I think it can very often be close enough, but never 100% complete understanding.

Find common ground where we can both agree, and then go from there. And if my position is actually true, then I should be able to have a logical argument from any starting point that I personally can start from. If we can't agree on the starting point, that is we have a fundamentally different starting point, then we can't continue. Sucks, but can't do anything about it.

Blasty said :
- Are there any statements you find that everyone agrees is true?

No. There are solipsists who believe they're the only ones who exist, and there are extreme nihilists who don't even believe in any absolute truth, even if the position is argued to be contradictory to say "There is no truth" (Is that true?)

Blasty said :
- What are the main sources that you rely on? Are they 100% reliable?

My logic, my inductions, and other people's inductions. I don't think they, or anything, can be 100% reliable.

(Did you mean like news or science sources? In that case, generally nothing. I just try to look at everything, compare them, and see what is all agreed upon, and the evidence they site as well)

Blasty said :
- How do you determine if a source can be trusted?

Cross-referencing it with other sources to see if contradictions or agreements can be found. Now just because everyone agrees or disagrees doesn't mean it's true, but it at least adds validity to it.

I don't think so, no.

Another thing about importance is that it's inherently subjective on what is or isn't important. It depends on a mind prioritizing, which isn't "objective."

I also come from the perspective that knowledge is not truly accessible, which by that I mean you can know things, but not ever have 100% certainty of it. However, I don't know that for certain, because then I would have accessed the knowledge that knowledge isn't accessible, which is a contradiction. Which I mean, I think is a contradiction. I guess I'm not 100% certain...Lol

We do the best with what we have, but any of us could be wrong on anything. But I could be wrong.

I think truth is incredibly important but there are some times when I feel like someone's emotions outweigh the importance. It's kinda complicated I guess. I value truth very highly but I don't think it always takes precedence. I guess? I don't know.

I'll have to think about it more because I have a very high standard for truth but I don't think it should come at the expense of others.

Profiled for later. :)

Thanks for the food for thought. ^_^

Here are some questions I hope will be interesting to discuss:
- How important do you think is the truth?
depends greatly on context. like for telling stories, doesnt really matter if theyre true or not

- How do you determine if something is "true"?
you cant always know

- Generally, why do people lie?
if they have something to gain

On receiving information:
- How much of the information you hear and see would you consider to be truthful?
depends on context again. but i imagine most information isnt presently 100% correctly

- If you are exposed to misinformation, how do you handle it?
google the truth if its something i think is important

- How do you know that what you believe to be misinformation is in fact misinformation?
google

On conveying information:
- How much of the information you write and say would you consider to be truthful?
i usually dont have a reason to lie. but i do all the time anyway

- If not all of the information you write and say is truthful, why is that the case?
self gain. for fun.

- How do you know that the person you're communicating with is not misunderstanding you?
i dont

Some questions about discussing truth:
- Is it actually possible to communicate a message without any misunderstandings?
yes

- If someone has a strong belief in something that contradicts with your strong belief, how would you normally resolve the situation?
hopefully with constructive discussion. depending on the person that isnt often possible

- Are there any statements you find that everyone agrees is true?
no

Some questions on reliability of sources:
- What are the main sources that you rely on? Are they 100% reliable?
google

- How do you determine if a source can be trusted?
use multiple sources. many times you can find 20 places saying something works one way and 1 source saying the opposite

- Are there any sources of information that everyone agrees on?
no
