why does jagex fix stuff that isn't broken

Is there any way to guarantee this is safe?
Chrome permissions should ensure the extension is safe, just make sure to check them. Currently it just wants access to a few websites.

Chrome extensions have to list all host domain names they want to be able to connect to. This list, along with some other permissions will be shown to you when/before you install it or if you click the Permissions link for the extension on the extensions page.
An extension simply won't be allowed contact a server whose domain name isn't listed.
If the permissions are changed with an update of the extension, it will be disabled until you confirm the new permissions.
Other than that there isn't much I can do to prove to you and others that it is safe. I can only give you my word your account will be just as safe with or without this extension , even though someone's word doesn't mean much over the internet.
If you are really paranoid, you could always check the source code if you know javascript, or maybe ask someone else you trust that knows it to check it for you. Google and you'll find clear guides on how to view the source code of a Chrome extension.
The code isn't obfuscated or minified, so it shouldn't be hard to skim through.
I am kinda surprised that it took 11 pages before this question was asked though, lol
