I think you might have told me previously, but can you go straight into exploration?
You can but there will be limitations. I built myself up a bit before I did any deep space exploration, during that time I became familiar with ship's systems and module configurations and that helped lots. I did combat, trade, and now exploration.
It's also good to die a few times early when in populated space since you don't have much to lose and your first ship is free and replacement is not costly.
When exploring in deep space the cartographic data you collect (can be and hopefully will be valuable) is lost on death, it can only be cashed in (sold) in populated space. One mistake could wipe out weeks or months worth of data. Remember it's PvP too, out in the black you wont see anyone (very unlikely) and there are zero NPCs outside populated space, but back home you might encounter unfriendly players or NPCs. Even in solo mode you are not 100% safe.
There are escort services (from other players, usually fellow explorers) who are armed to the teeth that will get you back to a dock safely and defend you if needed, after a long trip. There are re-fuel services too, in case you run out. These are player run via the forums. I haven't used them or needed to use them and I'm confident I can get back home without any trouble.
Get a feel for it before heading out into the black, it wont take long and once you know the basics you can go for it. People have gone to the centre of galaxy and back in their starter ship (though with some modifications) but they had some level of experience.
