The main problem with 3-D and all things VR is that it is and will most likely always be just a niche thing. It's way too expensive for the average person to afford and honestly, it just won't be able to provide enough entertainment in all genres to replace them entirely.
It is a buzzword at this point and nothing more. By the time it even gathers serious steam, most of us will not be around to see it. Sure, science fiction movies and TV shows have depicted a world where it dominates every corner of entertainment but that's fantasy and nothing more. It's right up there with flying cars. The reality is it would never be implemented because there are far too many morons out there who can't drive on the ground. Just imagine setting them loose in the air.
The metaverse is something that will probably never be fully implemented because it really wouldn't be suitable for the vast majority of things that the Internet or even normal gaming can provide. Most games would not benefit from a VR version any more than they would from a multiplayer or co-op version. Some things just don't fit the existing mold.
So why not create new molds? Perhaps, one day, but for the present, with an ever-growing lower and middle-income economy that is seeing more people struggle just to survive -- no, I don't think it'll happen in our lifetime.
The billionaires can play with their expensive toys and spend unholy amounts on a 6-minute space flight for their wealthy buddies but that fad will pass too as enough people end up on the street digging for food in dumpsters.
The present Internet has enough problems of its own. Those need to be sorted out before it can be tossed on the trash heap in favor of VR-enhanced searches for pron and torrents.
