I guess I can understand if someone just keeps dying (makes getting kill harder+slower+that person has to bank etc costing more time) you don't want to split with them but it's not really something I'd do. I've been splitting shields when I go with friends simply because it's fair and it'd take thousands of kills for before our luck with shields would even out.

My team mostly do keep. I've missed 17 shields in 400 kills. I'm bad and I feel bad.

Don't you hate that? When I went with friends they wanted to keep too because that's what most people did then but there's really no point in keeping instead of splitting imo. You'll only end up with some people making a lot more than others while everyone is contributing to kills equally.
