Not sure if it is because I was oblivious, or has something changed? My biased opinion is that majority of the people still playing this game are veterans who have spent/wasted countless hours on Runescape. Deep down they hate themselves for the time wasted, and feel the need to take out their frustration on others. Whether its a subconscious decision, it makes it difficult for newer people who try to enjoy the game for what it is.

Tbh it's the newer tier of maxers (from the past 12 months or so) that have the elitist attitude, most of the people from 2010-2013-ish have a quite relaxed attitude to it all really.
I'm not too sure in all honesty, I guess the era of PvM was never going to help - something where you can't really be social is not going to help your social skills.

Sometimes I need to sit back and remind myself that it is a game. Many people who play this game do not think the same way that I do. For some people this is much more than a game. This is life.

It annoys me seeing people maxing after me being elitists to people maxing after them.
It stems from an insecurity that these people seem to have. I am starting to notice it the more I talk to people on this game nowadays.
"L0L You just now got a sub 5min Araxxor ranged kill? You're such a newfag justice deeps"
"You bring a Yak to Yaka? L0l use raid fc u autistic f***"
"can't stand these retards at cache; wtf r they all turnin automoton wen I NEED IT. r they so stoopid not to realize I am superior ??"
"nice leechfeater & leechdevil. u sux u fkn tard. u obv fail at life and shud nys cuz u cant do it ur own hh3h3h3"
Just a handful to get you started.
Haha. Some people just don't get everyone has to start somewhere and that somewhere usually means being bad (you can't get good without being bad first). It's funny watching them talk as if they immediately became good at a specific boss.
We're in some "banter" era where all this is just a bit of fun!
I prefer being a solo player. While it's severely limiting at times (no access to armour like raids, not making bank off vorago, not being able to get Final Boss), it's so much more stress-free and all you have to worry about is yourself and your own abilities. You can learn at your own pace and do what you do without being constantly judged 24/7 (you obviously can be judged from outsiders but it's easy to ignore).
I view comments like you mentioned in a comedic way nowadays, even if it's aimed towards me.
