Mod Deg said in fc yesterday (or was it 2 days ago?) drops are awarded to the 50 people who did most damage, so in the large masses it's possible to not get a drop if joining in late. There's a chat message when you've done x damage stating you'll get the drop as long as you remain in combat until it dies though.
