Sooo the cms arent even necessarily players of runescape but rather people that are good at being forumers?!?

Don't get me wrong I have had no issues with them, and they seem to do a good job.

But really surely there are Jagex staff that play the game that can do this????

@C a z -

I see what you're getting at here, and I suppose it is possible that a CM might get hired that has a wealth of experience as a community manager, but who isn't a die-hard RuneScape fan or very familiar with the game, but I'd say it's pretty unlikely.

Brandon and I were put on this project specifically because we both have a long history of playing RuneScape, and still enjoy the game to this day, as well as both having previous experience with community and social media management and player support. It's that combination of things that put us in this role, not just one or the other.

I agree that having a familiarity with, and a love of the game, are definitely important aspects of what we do as CMs, in that they show the RuneScape community that we're not just here to moderate and "do our jobs' but that we do love this game, and we are a part of the community, and I'm hoping that the community thinks of us more like that, and not just hired guns that come in here locking threads :P

However, it's also important to remember that for positions like this that a love of the game is not the be-all end-all, and that it is pretty important to hire people who have previous experience and skills in community and social media management so that they're not in over their heads, and aren't taking a kind of "flying by the seat of your pants" approach to moderation.

Obviously the intersection of those two worlds (experience and a love of the game) is ideal, however, and Keywords makes every attempt they can to make sure that happens when they hire someone on for a project.

As for why Jagex chose to hire us instead of hiring in-house for this, well I can't really speak to that, but I'll just say I'm very very glad they did ;)

Anyway, thanks very much for voicing your concerns, and if you have any other questions about us, or what we do here, or pretty much anything else, Brandon and I are always down to chat :)

To piggy-back on what CM Nick said, generally, when Keywords Studios is hiring, they look for not only those who have relevant experience for the tasks that they'll be doing, but also experience in the games that we're working on. Whether it's in Player Support, Quality Assurance, Localization, etc, they generally want people who're passionate about the games that we're working on. For example, when I saw that there was an opening to work on Jagex, along with social media management/community management experience was the requirement to have significant experience in playing RuneScape. Keywords wouldn't have assigned those with no knowledge about RuneScape and it's community onto this project.

If the employee already has a great understanding of the game, that cuts a lot of the cost of training someone on the subject matter. Especially for the bigger projects where you have over 100+ people working on a team.. If you have to train each person for 2+ weeks on not just the job tasks, but game-related subject matter, that's incredibly expensive. It's better to find those who already know the game.

I could certainly say that Nick and I, along with Neriphyra who I replaced have a considerable amount of experience with RS. I myself been playing for 14 years, and should have my comp cape within the next 2 months or so. It's definitely been a life-long dream to work with Jagex.

As for why Jagex brought us on to do this task, I can't speak on their behalf, but as mentioned in the original post, Keywords Studios also works closely with Jagex with their Player Support, Localization and more. So I'd imagine that Jagex was intrigued by the additional services which we provide (like Community Management), and saw some benefits in adding a couple people who could help alleviate some of the stress on the Community Management team so they could focus more on their more critical tasks and assignments, and we're happy to assist them & the community in any way possible. :)

Thank you for the further clarification on how it works CM Nick and CM Brandon, it clears a few concerns I had.

Also I'm glad you didn't take offence as there was none intended for either of you, and think you are both doing great :)
