As distasteful as I find it you're allowed to say you can follow me on twitter and the like. Heck many have hashtags in their signatures or @ signs.
I would hazard a guess it's due to the fact they created an entire thread to do so.
In this case it would be up to the FMR thread to handle such a request. so you can post there and have the j-mods weigh in on the subject.
