Dragon & Arch:
Believe it or not, when I created my first character, Runescape had only been running for two years (something I realized this year). I've seen pretty much everything, and it does affect gameplay for those of us who don't bot or real world trade.
Free trade is easily abused by people who want to get ahead, and although you and I might have too much honor to bot, just look at any coal mining spot,( like the miners guild) if you think people don't bot.
And the wilderness becomes more dangerous near the edges than it is in the depths. When I first started, there were only a total of 82 quests (or maybe that was quest points). Botting was much less prevalent, but hazing was even more rampant. Scamming players happened all the time, since there was no limit to how much you could trade, and older more experienced players often pulled tricks that are no longer possible because of flashing red exclamation points during trades. And, as I mentioned in the last post, bored, high level players preyed on the inexperienced near the borders of the wildy.
My first day playing I crossed the border because I wanted to pick up a skull I saw and got killed by a lvl 98 player. I had nothing valuable, so that wasn't it. More experienced players who have gotten bored (and lack manners... not all of them do this) prey on them just because they can.
