What does the community management team actually do?

I've been wondering the same thing. Events are crap in comparison to what they used to be, there is no interaction with the community, and so on. Makes one wonder what they are truly doing.

Depends on which event you go to - typically combat minigames are more popular and will have a bigger turnout.

You'll see us posting across the forums, reddit and other social medias. We're constantly coming up with new events and competitions (assume you saw the Christmas forum, and the facebook one too), as well as livestreaming, videoing and planning for upcoming events.

What would you like to see more of from us?

Hmm ... I thought Community management = managing the community.

You thought you wanted you wanted to train a skill?
WRONG!!!!
It was really the CM team sending you subtle brain altering message thru your game interface telling you to work on that skill.

Well, since you asked...

More of...
- "Bottom up" event support, rather than "top down." By this, I mean try to attend and promote player-led event initiatives, rather than organize JMod-led events from scratch. I think the JMod events are becoming too frequent and taking too much time out of JMod schedules. One JMod event per week is sufficient, perhaps two if there's a major in-game update that you want to promote. If you also attend 1-2 other player events per week, that's plenty of opportunity for players to see/meet JMods in-game.

- Passing on feedback from the forums to developers. Mod Slayer used to be the community liaison to game developers, and before her, Mod Emilee. Now it doesn't seem like there is any particular JMod responsible for collating and reviewing feedback. This is an important task and I think one JMod on the community management team should focus on this.

- Posting on Reddit. There's a very large community on Reddit, and players over there tend to have honest and well-informed opinions. It's a good place for JMods to watch more closely.

- Broader forum coverage. There are a number of subforums which rarely see JMod posts. Each day, pick one forum outside of General, Rants, or Recent Updates, and make a couple of posts over there. There are a lot of sub-communities on the forums to engage with.

At the same time, you can focus less on...

- Email support. I would discontinue the community@jagex email account. Mod Balance said recently that this inbox receives dozens of emails per day. Community management is a public role, and the private nature of email is a distraction from more important responsibilities. Removing this email account would save a lot of time and is consistent with the previous removal of other support emails and emphasis on the Support Centre/ticket system for support. Players in need of community-related assistance can already take advantage of numerous forums and social media platforms for help.

- Twitter. There's a big community on Twitter, but I would try to interact with them primarily through the @Runescape account instead of through individual JMod accounts. Definitely tweet about important updates or announcements, but I would reduce the volume of "chatty" tweets or information about your personal lives. JMods shouldn't feel obligated to reply to every single tweet/DM, especially ones about bans/player support issues. And don't spend a lot of time reading your TweetDecks, it's just not very productive (in my experience).

Pre-Mod Sabre vs Paul M holiday events. Everything after and including that event sucked.

Some actual interaction with the community as in taking and executing feedback and having just-that in higher priority than some lame plans the content team tends to usually have.

I agree that JMods could support player-run events more than they currently do - however if you do ask one of the CM team JMods to attend your event they generally will agree.

As for the Reddit comment - yes, Reddit has a lot of active users, but don't forget that on the actual constructive posts or on the update requests, you often see Mod Balance (CM Team) post.

The generally "chatty Twitter" makes players feel closers to Jagex than ever before, so it definitely is a good way to engage with the community, however it should definitely not go at the cost of their workload at the office. Remember that JMod Twitter accounts are personal to them as well, more or less every JMod has in his Twitter header something along the lines of "Nothing of what I say represents my employer".

As for the "passing on to developers" - I see Infinity post such things quite often (just yesterday there was an issue with reporting bugs on the RSOF and Infinity got in touch with the web development team and it was fixed within the hour). Granted, it's not his primary focus and I agree that a JMod could pick up the task of reporting suggestions more frequently.

Personally, what I agree with most, is that JMods need to interact more on the RSOF. Every now and then, you see Matthe, Neena, Jon or Stevew post - sometimes Infinity or Balance as well, but it simply doesn't cut it. The way the forums work is part of the problem - it isn't user friendly enough and it's outdated. The forums really need to be revived, and massive interaction between JMods and the forum users would be a big leap towards achieving this.

(also I have a feeling this isn't the right thread for this discussion haha :D )
