I would like to comment on what I been hearing about the younger generation adapting to the EOC, I will say there will probably be a few that will be ok with it - but I would have to say that a magority of them won't give it a 2nd look. I'm a dad with 2 young boys and yes I allow them to play games, supervised of course.
However my boys are growing up in newer technology and so are most of the young generation, they are learning to play games that utilize all key strokes/functions and I'm sure in time the newer games will be even better. My boys at first were interested in playing Runescape, although their primary interests are still in XBOX and PS3 - they do play computer games as well. However with Runescape, it's basically click and hit gaming system, even with EOC it is still click and hit - nothing as far as I am concerned are real improvements.
My huntch is, if Jagex doesn't grab hold of the newer gaming platforms and utilize the entire keyboard as an extension of the game - eventually they will fade out. For example, why can't we jump in Runescape? Why can't we dodge? Why can't we scroll through our combat styles fluidly and acces them with ease and apply them in combat with different keystrokes? I'm not talking about the new attributes for the new EOC combat, I'm talking about casting fire wave and a second later slashing out with a sword - or a simple dodge hit, cast...umm these are key functions that almost every game applies to their combat system, well the good ones anyhow.
The EOC combat system is not "real time" combat and all though once you figure out the key mashing method, it does work - but for most players they will walk away from this game and that is the honest truth.
The spamming is ludicrous, if I don't run invisible I am bombarded with spam and yes bots still rule Runescape. These 3 key elemnts (combat, spamming, bots ) are critical, there are more reasons as so many have stated - but for me these 3 really do it for me.
