Around the Campfire

Today we invited 3 Jagex-ians from different teams that are behind the new RuneScape
website and the new seasonal hi-scores
. They are...

Mod Lee M

I’m Mod Lee M, I’m the Lead Creative Designer for RuneScape. What does my title mean? Well, it means that me and my team of minions deal with any non-game related graphics & artwork that is public facing. For example, the new website, the motion comic, marketing assets such as adverts, any print work for exhibitions and the cool illustrations usually come from the talented team that work for me. I’ve been at Jagex for nearly 4 years but have only been in my current role for about 1 year.

Mod Galcian

I’m Mod Galcian, Senior Game Designer on Runescape and I’m currently working on the new Seasonal Highscores, various elements of RS3 (camera, new NPC combat overlays and reticules etc.) and some new content we can’t talk about just yet! I’ve only been at Jagex for about 5 months, but I’ve worked at numerous other companies (Codemasters, Frontier Developments and Crytek to name a few) and I’m taking all the knowledge I’ve gained from those studios and applying it here at Jagex to make RuneScape as good as we know it can be!

Mod MKilley

I’m Mod Mkilley, Project Manager on Runescape and currently working on RuneScape 3 and some other upcoming content! I’ve been at Jagex for a number of years now and have worked on a lot of different areas of the game across both the website and game, for example clans.

Unfortunately one of our guests, Mod Mkilley, won't be able to join us today as he's very busy with work on RuneScape 3. Fear not, we are bringing you a Senior Web Developer, J-Mod and Police Officer in one instead! Say hi to Mod Barnzy !

Mod Barnzy

I have been working at Jagex between 4-5 years now, starting in the Player Support team before moving onto the Website Development team. I have worked on every live iteration of the RuneScape website since what is now called the ‘Old School’ version of the website. I have also worked on the Stellar Dawn, FunOrb, War Of Legends, Transformers, RuneFest, Jagex Corporate and Jagex Careers websites to name a few. I’m very enthusiastic when it comes to web technologies and love to dabble with all the new tech that is appearing. In my spare time I like to spend time with friends, build plugins and websites (I can’t get enough of it) and fight crime as a Police Officer.

But that's not all! We have 2 more talented folks who are eager to meet you and talk to you! Pleased to welcome Mod Gill (Head of Creative Services at Jagex) and Mod Rascasse (Senior Software Tester on RuneScape) among us today :)

Mod Gill

Hi everyone, I’m Mod Gill and I'm the Head of Creative Services here at Jagex. Creative Services are a frighteningly talented team who design the websites, and associated marketing materials for RuneScape and the upcoming Transformers game. I’m fairly new to the games industry so it’s great to get the chance to build my knowledge about our community by taking part in today's Campfire!

Mod Rascasse

I’m Mod Rascasse, Senior Software Tester on RuneScape. I’m responsible for testing all the software Jagex makes except the game itself. This means everything from the Adventurer’s Log to the forums, as well as things like setting new character names and recovering access to a lost account. I’m currently working to ensure any bugs in the new RuneScape 3 website are found and squashed before July 22nd.

Without a further ado here are their answers to your burning questions:

Should we be expecting any changes within the near future? As the Forums are part of the Website and they're getting pretty out-dated now.

Hi Epicus, we are planning to update the forums in the future, along with many other sections of the website, so watch this space!

Will we be able to create our own highscore competitions? I.e. our clan wants to do a competition, and we want to track xp gain from our members in certain skill(s). This would be a great feature.

Ironically, this is something we were speaking about just today! Unfortunately this isn't something we were able to get in for launch, but it's something we're very interested in exploring in the future. :) No promises though, as it could be quite complicated technically :( .

Q.) Could you give us an example of how we will be able to customise the website for ourselves?

To begin with, we're adding an area to the front page with quick links to access features like forums, hiscores, adventurer's log, grand exchange etc. These are pretty big buttons, and you'll be able to set three of the six to be links to the part of the website you're most interested in. You have to be logged in to do this, but once it's done it will be saved on your profile so it will be the same every time you log in (no matter what computer you use).

Probably the new website is build with HTML5 and other supporting weblanguages. But html5 is still in development, so my question is:

Do you keep the website updated to the latest build of HTML5 or will you wait until its finalised ?

We wanted to utilise as much of the emerging technology as possible. However, we are very much aware how new HTML5 is and that the spec is going through change on a weekly basis. We made an attempt to only use aspects of HTML5 that we hadn't seen change in a while and only use in areas of the website that weren't critical to users accessing their account and/or playing the game.

That being said, we are constantly reviewing our use of new tech and as and when new technology becomes available, we look to integrate into the website.

My question is this: The picture I saw of the new Runescape website doesn't show a 'play old school' icon, where will that be when the new website comes out, as it doesn't fit into any of the boxes on the new website.

Hi V1R7U5, if you love RS old school you will be able to easily customize one of the featured links on the homepage. We have also added a link to RS old school in a little drop down menu that appears if you move your mouse cursor over the RuneScape logo in the top left hand corner of the website. meaning you can quickly access RS old school from anywhere on the website.

Ok just thanks a lot... Not

Where is old school runescape on that page?????

you as jagex created this version of the game, so why not advertise it?

You'll be able to get straight to Old School from a drop down menu under the Runescape logo at the top left, above the menu bar. I don't think this has featured in the video or the posts you'll have seen so far, but I promise you it is sssssslick.

Is the lobby going to be different in RS3? What will it look like?

Not that I'm aware of, focus is being centered on the initial experience on the website at the moment.

About Seasonal hiscores, will it be possible for us to create clan competitions using these?
Currently the only proper tool to run a clan competition is runetrack.*** and with that you can only hold xp completitions (since it can only get data from the hiscores).
From what I understand, with seasonal hiscores it will be possible to create a competition, for example, about who can kill the most Dominion Tower bosses. It would be very useful if clans were able to create these.

There may be some confusion over how Seasonal Highscores are actually going to work :( .

Unfortunately it won't be possible for players themselves to create their own competitions around content we've got within Runescape. Instead, this task will be given to the awesomely talented developers within Jagex. The great thing about the system is that it's really really easy for the developers to do this, so we can potentially have High Scores based around tons of different types of content.

As I said in the BTS video; you guys (the players) are going to be instrumental in helping us decide which content deserves it's own Seasonal Highscore so please do have a think about what you'd like to see! :) .

Will we get an update to the clan highscores/ clan pages etc.?

thanks,
- Talos of Til

We will have a new design for all of the high scores pages that we think is clearer and easier to use. This will be applied to the clan hiscores as well as the player hiscores and the new seasonal hiscores. Apart from that though, we won't be adding any new features to clan hiscores this time.
