I would love to see Red Ribbon expanded to cover small-unit variations where engaging forces are outnumbered by enemy. Coordination would have to be emphasized, as stragglers of small-unit tactics are often picked off first by either side. In practice, I've found cover to be an absolutely horrid choice against a hard charger, as they will wait for your blade to cross before attempting a tackle while their comrades encircle. It would be great if a suitable counter to such a counter was added to the cover section. Lastly, breaking a pile was never among my favored techniques, simply because you have to be rather far up ****'s creek without the proverbial paddle in order for the maneuver to even be applicable. For those that far up said creek, it may be useful to warn against wrestling maneuvers from enemy, as they can pin the fighter and allow enemy comrades to dispatch you at their leisure.

^Quite true. I wrote this before I had read ''if the enemy draws in close, then wrestle'' from the various commentaries on the Liechtenauer tradition.

I can definitely see how charging would mess up a cover. While in foil, I'll typically parry in the direction I'm moving and thrust once I'm to the side of the group - though keep in mind, the best I've done with this in foil so far is against four people.

For better techniques in dealing with piles, I know some people who've been through quite a few fights irl, and teach a form of it or another for a living. Might be time to arrange an interview.

Mmm. If not magic, Chinchompas work well too.

In all seriousness, if you are somehow in a situation with a pile of people who know what they are doing, chances are they will have pikes, or other polearms to stab with limited side motion. They won't get in eachother's way, and can even back up a bit to keep from hitting eachother. The weapon itself is decent for blocking/parrying, and an attempt to attack any of them will likely find a couple more lunging at you.

Overall, if you are being attacked by four+ people surrounding you with the right weapons, there isn't much you can hope for in an advantage.

That's not even counting their buddies likely have arrows/magic to hit you from a distance at a higher elevation. But that also assumes the character in question is high profile enough to justify piling, but has crappy guards who either died on him/her or no guards at all.

That's quite true. Though you'd be surprised by the number of people who don't really know what they're doing, and part of the issue you pointed out comes from information the Sicarius had access to elsewhere but wasn't mentioned in this thread. I'll have to fix that issue up for Combat , as that'll otherwise leave players scratching their heads if they're expected to know something that wasn't taught.
