Many reporters from across the world, whether they be heralds of the faith, owners of printing presses, Magi, or just a strong connective network of messengers, chroniclers, and town criers stood. A podium was erected, in the middle of Falador's East square. Slowly, a Dwarf, Audmann Runeheart , made his steps to the podium. Though short, he carried an air of authority, power, and charisma of a King.

''My Lords, My Ladies, Peasantry and Clergy alike of all Gielinor. I stand before you today to announce the most ambitious and expensive project, I have ever undertaken in my century and a score years on this world.

I am here to formally announce, the Rune Round Run. The days of easy teleportation and magic have done a disservice to those humble travellers on Unicorn-back. The consistent use of teleportation by cheaper and easier means among humans, has been tied to a feeling of adventurous spirit lost. To many, the world has grown small, and the noble Knight and Cavalier are slowly becoming relics of the past.

To us Dwarves, this is a horror. We are incapable of magic, let alone teleportation. We must walk place to place. It is because of this, I announce a transcontinental race, in my own interest. To prove to the world that non-law magic means of travel, truly have a place in our world. To prove the mounted warrior who has dominated our tales of Heroism, Romance, and Adventure will forever have a place in our hearts, but also our consideration.'' The Dwarf paused, gauging responses.

''The grand prize of this race, will measure at 80,000 platinum coins. From my personal treasury.''

Shocks came from the crowd. Many people began writing. It was well-known that a platinum coin would always be worth 25 gold a piece, putting this prize in astronomical heights of 2 million. Enough to be classed as nobility. Or a petty King.

''The Race will go from Menaphos, to Oo'glog. I call it, the Rune Round Run. ''

It didn't take long for word to spread quickly. A prize to end all prizes. A prize so ambitious, bankers began to fear inflation. Untold glory for generations.

To many, this race was no longer a contest. It was a war. A chance to prove your country had the best Mounted racer, of all time. Ticket sales in hot air balloons to watch the race were already flying, at a truly once in a lifetime chance.

Was Audmann aware of the disaster he had just unleashed upon the world? Probably not. People who bring such destruction with their oblivious behaviour are rarely, if ever, aware of what they have done.

Welcome to The Rune Round Run.

What is the Run?

This is my last plot on 42. A wrap-up to a long story, but there is no need to be sad! (Other than you lot celebrating in the back, don't think I don't see you.) If you don't go out with a bang, there isn't much point in going out at all.

This plot is (mostly) what it says. It is an international race across Gielinor, with all the twists, turns, and competition of greed driving the competitors, regardless of motives, to the limits of their bodies and sanity.

Sessions will take place weekly, for the checkpoint to checkpoint part of the race. Otherwise, competitors will deal with challenges along their road between these checkpoints they will need to confront. Because of this I expect the actual race part of the plot to take nine weeks.

The Course (Overview)

The Race Begins at Menaphos
The First Checkpoint is Nardah, by the Mercenary Camp.
The Second Checkpoint is Shantay Pass

The first two checkpoints of the race force competitors through the desert, and hopefully they prepare accordingly.

The Third Checkpoint is Varrock square. Though the fastest route is the desert North of Al Kharid, many are expected to go the Lumbridge route to ease the ride on their mounts.

The Fourth Checkpoint is just North of Falador, at the Crossroads. This means crossing the Lum, at some point.

The Fifth Checkpoint is in Seer's Village. As Mr. Runeheart does not want to anger Keldagrim or disturb it's productivity, the only practical way here is through the coldest area of the race, crossing White Wolf Mountain.

The Sixth Checkpoint is in Ardougne, North of the Zoo.

The Seventh Checkpoint is Yanille's gate, meaning riding through Khazard to it.

The Eighth, and final checkpoint, is Oo'glog, which means riding through the Feldip Hills and Ogre Lands.

All in all, the course pits the riders against plenty of sand, temperate climate, snow, and on the last legs, the heat of the Feldip Jungle and Outback. Half the race is in very hot climates.

Nat's Miniscule Mount Manual

So, you wanna ride horses? Too bad, they don't exist.

So you wanna ride Unicorns? Great! Because of a lack of Unicorns in the real world, we're going to use horses for comparison.

Horses have two and a half genders* that are used to distinguish them both in breeding historically and in most fantasy books.

The first, is perhaps the most famous, the Stallion. Stallions are called such because they need to be kept in stalls or stables, else they will fight with other horses. Stallions are the male horse, and are prone to be territorial and rowdy in captivity. They make great horses for jousters and officers, since they tend to take charge and move faster than their Mare and Gelding cousins. With great training, Stallions make for fine athletes, albeit large. How well will this training hold up though, when surrounded by many other mounts?

The second is the mare. Mares are the female horse, and while they are less territorial than Stallions, they are still a bit trickier to train than Geldings. Mares tend to be quieter, and more willing to follow orders, especially on staying focused and not fighting other horses.

The half is a Gelding. You may ask why I say half, and that is because this is a variation of a male horse, not allowed to... Yeah. Geldings tend to be the easiest to control since they lack hormonal urges, stay focused on their tasks, and are the most docile of the three, but also the least physically impressive.

*Do horses have genders? Not really, they lack society but I can't say the other word because censors.

So, what about size and age? Well, the older a horse is, the more cautious and slow it can be. Horses that are older tend to slow down, just like people. Maybe they want to move to Florida too. In an endurance race, a more cautious horse like this is not a bad call, as they are less likely to be injured by terrain, and know how to cross various terrain better.

It's also worth noting the bigger and stockier a breed of horse is, the more weight it can carry, but the slower it tends to go with its frame. This is why Knights had the largest horse size, commonly called Destriers, to tote them about in armour.

What about other mounts, besides Unicorns?

Well, in Gielinor we have Camels, Dragonwolves, Rockcrabs, Terrorbirds... But we'll focus on Terrorbirds and Camels.

Terrorbirds are similar to Ostriches, so I'm going to use their behaviour as an example. There's a ranch that will let people ride them, but they require you to be under 150 pounds. This is the weight limit of an Ostrich over short distances. So please, when calculating your character on a terrorbird, include their weight and equipment's weight to be sure it is possible. Terrorbirds are certainly more controllable than Ostriches, but riding one is probably only practical if you are say, Gnome size.

Camels can sustain speeds of 25 miles per hour, and are uniquely suited to desert travel. Given the first half of the race is all desert, this gives a camel rider a significant advantage early on, but may harm them in the later, temperate and cold terrains. In Runescape most Camels are jerks. But you can have an amulet to speak to them, so maybe you can convince one to play nice.
