Eden Artemis/ 35 / Burthorpe / Chief Asgarnian Correspondent

The Trolls

A shining day in Burthorpe, prideful gem of Asgarnia, cut short and dark with a defense against invading trolls. This is not an uncommon occurrence, yet still one that brings dread to all who call the fort city home. The horn sounds, as children run into their mother's arms. Their father's don their armor, gripping their weapons with pride.

This is everyday for the people of Burthorpe. It is this constant struggle to remain free, and alive, that fills each and every Burthorpian with the pride they are so well known for. How does one come to adjust to such a life? Several residents were asked this very question. A local farmer stated "It's hard sometimes, but we pull through. We have to. There are people that are depending on us to keep them safe, and I'm not afraid to pick up a sword and go fight a few trolls. If I die, well...then I die. At least I died for something, right?"

The man's words were inspiring. A simple farmer, ready to die against a foe many of us know nothing about. Such words are enough to keep any man pushing forward in whatever they are doing. For if a farmer can pick up a blade to protect us from a troll menace we will never see, then we too can complete our own task at hand.

I can contribute, so long as it wouldn't be focused on current events of the W42 canon. I do not keep track of it.

Perhaps some of the following jobs might interest you?

• Columnist - Encouraged to write pieces away from current afairs, and more 'random' or 'philosophical' pieces. Read some of our old issues on the RuneScape RP Wiki for examples.
• Jokes Column - Make people laugh!
• Horoscopes - Are you any good at writing horoscopes? This could be for you!
• Weather Forecast - Fancy making up some winds, or storms? They don't have to be canon, but it might be a nice feature.
• Advice Column - Think yourself a wise owl? Have people write in with their problems, and see how you can put them on the right track.

Representation in art, and the loss of innocence

I am an art lover; my friends know that if I am not to be found at home, I am likely visiting a museum or gallery for the third time that week. I write much of my material from the comfort of taverns, usually after an inspiring stroll around an exhibition.

It had been some time since my last visit to the Varrock gallery; the first time this year, in fact. I had not been since before the battle of Lumbridge. It should not have come as a surprise, then, to find that the old thrill of those depictions of heroic deeds in the Third Age, and the formation of our modern kingdoms, was tainted by the realities of experiencing the Second God Wars.

We all know the famous frescos of the Fifth Age, bringing the lamentable sack of Forinthry and the tragic fall of Hallowvale alive in our minds as though we were there. But those Fifth Age artists were part of a renaissance, and no more present at those events than you or I. It was naive of us, though very forgiveable I feel, to believe we could understand the horrors of cosmic warfare through the brush strokes of artists, no matter how celebrated. How little we knew.

Now we know. Now we understand. Now we find ourselves living similar events, without the luxury of a gallery in which to safely hang our memories, displayed neatly and safely and locked away at night.

Homes have been lost, loved ones, livelihoods, aspirations. And all we've gained in return is an understanding of events we were blissfully ignorant of.

It is a melancholy thing to hope for, but I will hope for it here: I look forward to a world in which our children, or grandchildren, or perhaps descendants further off in happier times to come, experience no more of our suffering than a misrepresentation hanging on a wall in a fancy city district. Because only then will we know we've won.
One man's trash is another's treasure, and one man's cash buys another's pleasure.
So I'll rob from the cradle, and I'll rob from the grave; it's just human traffic, and I'm just a slave.

Sand Traven Accepted! I'll most probably be publishing your piece during the issue, or an issue, but keep your eyes peeled over tonight and tomorrow for the next task list.

Thatds Absolutely anything! This is so that I can gauge not only your writing ability, but creativity as well. If you need any pointers: there's a short guide on page four, although that's for correspondent articles rather than columns or fiction writing.

Salvage
Shipwrecks sleep, drowning deep, and give me something good to keep...

Kyle's old mantra was probably the only reliable thing he knew.

It was almost a sadistic business, carrying up valuables from sunken ships, but in the end, wasn't everything? The earth lost ore. The sheep lost wool. As they were a part of it, it was only natural that humans would begin to lose things just as well.

When he finally reached the wreck, he could tell he was nowhere near the surface. He'd been letting himself sink for about a minute or two; without his water-proof lantern, he would be blind as a bat, and deader than Dracula.

He entered through a gaping hole in the side of the ship.

The ship's interior was darker than the outside.

He began looking around. There were chests and a few gold bars, but that's not what he was here for. His client had directed him to this ship personally; they said there was a particular item they wanted.

He turned around, and looked beside the hole.

Right where they said it would be, was the...thing.

He wasn't sure to make of it, even as he held it in his hands. A glass box, with a foreign gem embedded on a dull, golden ring. It almost looked like an onyx, but -

He lost his balance and almost fell over. He was running out of air! He must have forgotten to refuel his tank.

Desperately, he began flailing in the water, rising as fast as he could. It wasn't enough. His vision was darkening. He cast a final glance at the ring.

'This is your fault,' he wanted to say. 'I hope you know that.'

The world went black.
----
When he woke up, he was just outside Draynor Village.

He blinked a couple of times, and put his hand to his head. His other hand was clenching something. In his palm, he could feel it.

The ring was still there. It wasn't a dream.

"Weird," he muttered, slipping it into his pocket. "Harold's got some explaining to do when I find him."
Either get lucky or grind trying.

As an afterthought, the advice column sounds kind of interesting. I might want to try that, if nobody else steps up for it.

Okay! Have a think, and let me know which one you want to go for. :) I'll have a look through your piece in a moment, too.
