By the time he reached the age of nineteen, his slayer master was reaching the end of his career, already having remained in the position far beyond his years. When the time came, Sand was given his final assignment: to head out into the wilderness and slay a dragon. Narrowly avoiding the bandits and other dangers, he completed his task with his usual determined ambition, and returned to the village a full slayer.
With a proper profession under his belt and a desire to see more of the world, he took the opportunity to say goodbye to the village and head out in search of adventure elsewhere. He'd heard of the dwarves' ongoing battle with the trolls far below the earth in the city of Keldagrim, and made that his first port of call. Fortunately for him, the dwarves were in need of able-bodied soldiers, and so he signed on as a mercenary with a multicannon division, always having been interested by ranged weaponry. With their help, he quickly learned to maintain, assemble, disassemble, fire and repair the machines, thoroughly earning his pay. He only stayed with the dwarves for two years before deciding it was time to move on once more, heading to Kandarin to sign up with the gnomes in their war against Khazard.
This was new to him, as he'd never had to fight humans before, but having heard tales of Khazards' soldiers' cruelty, he felt moved to help them in any way he could. It took him a while to gain the trust of the gnomes, but eventually they put him to work as a signaller for their ballistae, relaying coordinates back behind the lines. He frequently had to venture far into no-man's land in order to pinpoint locations for the ones firing the great machines, crawling on his belly like a snake through the network of trenches and the mud. For the most part, he was fortunate enough not to have encountered the enemy much at all, being smart enough to avoid trouble when neccesary.

One man's trash is another's treasure, and one man's cash buys another's pleasure.
So I'll rob from the cradle, and I'll rob from the grave; it's just human traffic, and I'm just a slave.
