I posted this because most people would assume the water level goes up a bit because the anchor is now in the water and displaces some of the water.

The water level actually goes down a little bit. This is because the boat is now lighter (the anchor weighs) and the smaller part of the boat is in the water.

When the anchor is in the boat, the buoyancy used to hold it equals the anchor weight.
B=density(water)V(water displaced)g=m(anchor)g
m(water)=m(anchor)

So the anchor displaces as much water as it weighs when it's on the boat.

On the water it displaces: V(water displaced)=V(anchor)

Because the density of the anchor is bigger than that of the water... the anchor displaces less water when it's in the water. So when you throw it in the water from the boat... the water level goes down a little bit.

interesting. I was also fighting with that, which would be more. Stands to reason tho. :D

Chess endgame checkmate secrets:

The hardest method to checkmate the opponent in a chess endgame:
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
1 Bishop (field color doesn't matter)
1 Knight

Black:
King.

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to the corner color with same field color as your bishop and the bishop will be the piece to do a checkmate.
All your pieces must cooperate to do a checkmate.

After comes with checkmate with 2 bishops.
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
2 Bishops

Black:
King

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to a corner color with same field color of 1 of your bishops. The bishop with same corner color will do a checkmate.
All your pieces much cooperate to do a checkmate.

Another one with rooks:
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
1 Rook

Black:
King

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to the last line together with your king and rook. The rook will do a checkmate while your king is facing the opponent.
All your pieces much cooperate to do a checkmate.
__________________________________________________________________

Easier with 2 rooks:
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
2 Rooks

Black:
King

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to the last line together with your 2 rooks. One of the rooks will do the checkmate while the other one blocks the second line.
Your king is not needed on this easy method.

The basic one for most new chess players to checkmate is to learn the method how to win with just queen + king.
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
Queen

Black:
King

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to the last line or corner with just your queen! (It is possible) and then advance your king freely close to your queen and the queen will do the checkmate. The king is needed.
I'm gaÿ.

With only knights are possible but will not work.
Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
2 Knights

Black:
King

The method is to force the opponent (black king) to a corner with together will all your pieces. however, to do a checkmate, the opponent must help you and not trying to run with its king.

Knights are the only piece in chess that can't do a ''Tempo move'' (a move that you do that doesn't do anything or easier way to say, you throw your move to let the opponent do one move).
All your pieces much cooperate to do a checkmate but will not work versus a good chess player.
I'm gaÿ.

Yes, checkmate with 1 Knight and 1 Bishop sounds difficult, although possible. Remember you only have 50 moves. :P

How about this:

Pieces on checkerboard:

White:
King
Pawn

Black:
King
It works but must be doing the right moves. Wrong moves by white will results a draw. If the white pawn in start posiion a2 (or h2) then it's a 100% draw if the black player knows how to counter white from converting his pawn into a queen.

Pawn in a2 (or h2):
Black will place his king on a8 (or h8) and white can't force the black king away from a8 (or h8) for white's pawn-queen conversion square. That's draw.

Other pawn start position is a win because white here can force the black king away from its pawn's last square and white can easily convert into a queen and wins.
Reason: there is good space around the pawn.

Pawn in a2 (or h2): there is no space here. Black king can stay here in a8 (or h8) forever and white will make it draw in a stalemate.
I'm gaÿ.
