"Interesting fact: We get better at solving insight-problems when we are tired or intoxicated. Why? Our executive function is inhibited, so information that would normally be deemed distracting is allowed to filter in. We thus become better at seeing remote associations."

Bit strange that he took frequent stimulators, then.. that would have scuppered the entire process, while both making it harder to percieve conclusions, and harder to remember them, once reached..

True... Though the book is more like ''Here's Sherlock Holmes ! You like Sherlock Holmes. Let me tell you a bit about triks for thinking, regardless of what Sherlock Holmes did, coupled with a few interesting anecdotes about Sherlock Holmes that you like".

While we're on the topic:

"From a drop of water a logician can infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of either one." - Sherlock Holmes

"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." - Sherlock Holmes

I want to smoke pipe. It looks cool... (Though probably expensive, and annoying, and unhealthy...)

*realises who I'm talking with*

Correction: I want to smoke something through a smoking-device called a ''pipe''.

Some sciency/semi-science quotes ! And some rationality.

"The fact that humanity is spending billions of dollars on Football while ignoring the existential risks that can completely extinguish it, and whose successful navigation could determine the shape of its whole future... There's no sort of deeply clever explanation for that." - Eliezer Yudkowsky

"What are the best tools for understanding humanity's future?
'A laptop, a whiteboard and a cup of coffee.'" - Anders Sandberg

"If you once tell a lie, the truth is ever after your enemy."

"No testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle, unless the testimony be of such a kind, that its falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact which it endeavors to establish." -- David Hume, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

"If you can bring yourself to a state of real doubt and genuine curiosity, there is no need for Devil's Advocacy. You can investigate the contrary position because you think it might be really genuinely true, not because you are playing games with time-traveling chocolate cakes. If you cannot find this trace of true doubt within yourself, can merely playing Devil's Advocate help you?" - Eliezer Yudkowsky

"As rationalists, we are obligated to criticize ourselves and question our beliefs... are we not? Consider what happens to you, on a psychological level, if you begin by saying: "It is my duty to criticize my own beliefs." Roger Zela*ny once distinguished between "wanting to be an author" versus "wanting to write". (...) Criticizing yourself from a sense of duty leaves you wanting to have investigated, so that you'll be able to say afterward that your faith is not blind. This is not the same as wanting to investigate." - Eliezer Yudkowsky, "The Meditation on Curiousity"
