What do you do on those sleepless nights when it seems sleep is for everyone else, but you. You toss, you turn, you beat the pillow to death, but sleep just won't come. You relax making sure each and every muscle is limp. You close your eyes and it seems your lids are on springs and they pop back open.

What do you do?

I sit on the side of the bed in the dim light of the hallway. After a minute or two, I get up, grab my cane and stumble into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee (caffeine never prevented me from going to sleep). I'll sit down at the table to think about my problem.

Things that have helped me get to sleep (sometimes):

1...put on some soft music with string instruments low volume so I can barely hear it. Lay back in my Lazy Boy recliner and drift off to sleep.

2...Go to YouTube, find a very boring topic. Lay back in my Lazy Boy recliner and drift off to sleep.

3...Play a hidden object game on the computer. I'll fall asleep in my desk chair.

4...Make a cup of Lady Grey tea, sit in my recliner but putting it back only half way and listen to the house creaking and making subtle noises while sipping the tea. The house is 93 years old and is settling into the ground.

5...Or, I'll say the heck with it, get dressed and prepare for the day. 'Round about 2 pm, I'll take a nap and sleep for 3 to 4 hours.

What are your solutions?

Diphenhydramine, usually.

I have bad insomnia, and have had it for my entire life.

A solution I've used since childhood is to literally tell myself a story, so that helps. Plus it's good entertainment for when I can't manage to fall asleep.

I'll imagine I've won lots of money on the lottery ( never going to happen because I don't do the lottery ). After deducting the amount needed for a nice house I try to work out how much of it would need to be invested at various interest rates ( extremely low at the moment ) to give me a good standard of living including employing someone to do the garden and a lot of the housework. The remaining amount I plan how much I'd give family and friends followed by which charities I'd donate money to, anonymously of course. Doing the sums in my head usually sends me to sleep. :P
On the rare occasions that doesn't work I read a book on my tablet. That means I can leave the lights off so I don't disturb my husband. I don't get up because for most of the year I'd get cold.
edit to add: the heating is off overnight

I have taken sleeping pills on occasion, but I don't like the way they make me feel when I get up in the morning. My brain feels heavy, I'm unable to process things logically, I can't carry on an intelligent conversation. I feel drugged. This will last 30 minutes to an hour.

Another method of falling asleep is warm milk and honey. Warm milk contains Melatonin a natural chemical within our body that allows us to fall asleep. Honey has other properties that help us relax. I read someone once said, "Every evening I fix myself a cup of warm milk and honey before going to bed. I sit and sip it like fine wine. By the time I'm finished with the drink, I'm ready to go to bed."

I'm really happy to say I have that problem incredibly rarely.

I don't have a strategy for dealing with it, I usually end up wandering miserably from one room to the other feeling sorry for myself.

I've tried all the usual things like a boring TV programme, browsing a book or magazine, listening to soothing music but they don't work for me. Maybe because on the very rare occasions I am sleepless it's because something awful has happened/is going to happen and my brain just won't let it go.

Just to add .... I've got a weird sleep pattern anyway brought about by years of the Ole Man doing shift work. Sometimes I'd eat my dinner at 3pm and it'd be bedtime at 7pm then a shift change meant we'd be eating dinner at 2am and bedtime (for me) would be 6am.

He doesn't do shifts any more and I'm starting to regularise my activities into a more 'normal' rhythm.

^ quite the same in terms of dodgy sleep schedules - said good morning 8pm today :) Life is like a camera: Just focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don't work out, take another shot !

As out of world for my time as i am , i sleep beside rocks and a greenish crystal, sometimes i even hold rocks as i sleep, helps me a bunch. my stress levels are so high. No idea why i'm so different than other people lol. The rocks have to be fueled with energy by placing them in water every so many months tho. no full idea as this method is unknown i think, just something i do since i noticed i gain energy from rocks etc.
