I've trained horses before. Here's how we are able to control them. Lot's of ground work.

1. Let them get used to you.
2. Bond with them by brushing them and being around them and talking to them.
3. RUN them around the round pen in various directions, but don't instill fear into them by putting a whip on them, spin a rope in a circular motion whilst pointing.
4. While in the pen try and get the saddle on the horse, if the animal wants to fight vocalize a strong loud command and get them to run the pen more, establish dominance.
5. Try #4 again. When the saddle is on run them in the round pen more.
6. Desensitize the horse - add weight, make lot's of noise, etc. until the critter is accustomed to those things.
7. Saddle up, but your left foot in the stirrup on the left side of the horse while grabbing the saddle seat and push off of the ground while pulling yourself up and throw your right leg over.
8. Grab the reigns keeping your hands in front of the saddle horn and squeeze your legs while clicking with your tongue to go forward. To get the horse to turn right put pressure on the horses /left/ side using your left leg while lessening pressure with your right leg and tug the reigns gently to the right. To go left do the opposite. For a stop say "WOAH" while pulling back. If the horse wants to be moody and crow hop ride it out until the horse chills out then run it in the pen again.

The above is the method another guy and myself used to train a horse.

Also I'd suggest for the tack getting a tie down which connects the halter to the breast collar so the horse can't reach around and bite or try to throw you. If you're a green rider I wouldn't recommend trying to train the horse yourself, get someone who does it professionally or the horse will pick up bad habits. Also breaks + rewards go a long way in training, don't want to have a horse that hates you or has a broken spirit.

@Wild Bill:

Why can't you train a horse to be mounted on the right side? Possibly a deterrent from someone stealing your horse.

The summer after graduating from high school, I got a summer job at a Dude Ranch. My job title was Wrangler. I had two responsibilities: 1)...Trail Guide. When people came to ride the horses, I guided the group down the trails to make sure no one got lost or tried a wild ride off trail and into the woods. 2)...Boss got some new horses that were barely saddle trained. When business was slow or if it was my assigned job that day, I was to take a new horse out on the "back 40" to walk and trot in a fenced in 2 acre field. There were 3 of us Boss trusted not to get them lathered up.

There was one horse we were told about that wouldn't take a saddle, but could be rode with just a blanket. We tried everything we could think of (not abuse) to change the horse's mind. As soon as he felt the weight of the saddle, he bucked it off. There were a few regular riders that came to ranch and rode that particular horse.

That was one fun summer.

I think this convention was started in the UK a very long time ago.
Travellers on horses and wagons travelled on the left side of the road to facilitate the use of their right arm (sword arm) on any potential enemy travelling from the opposite direction.
Similarly, mounting on the left meant you were mounting in a safer non traffic side of the road.

Rooh's summary definitely makes the idea of riding an elephant sound terrible. I think most people 'privileged' enough to be chatting about a video game on the internet probably consider elephants pretty amazing and 'noble' creatures and would not want to cause them harm.

But perspective means a lot, as with anything.

I can't vouch for the website or article but it offers a different perspective.

^I've read quite a few articles on riding elephants lately and pretty much all of them state that riding elephants should not happen. And not just for the animals welfare. They can also spread disease to humans. Here's one I just read.
