The world's first traffic light was installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London on the 9th December 1868 to control horsedrawn traffic on Westminster Bridge. It had 3 semaphore arms and 2 gaslights ( red and green ) for night use. It was operated by a policeman. Despite being succesful at controlling traffic it didn't last long because it exploded on the 2nd January 1869 injuring the policeman.
