Is there a guide anywhere for tipping etiquette during the current pandemic and going into 2022? My mom and a few other ppl I know say not to tip for takeout during covid.

Does anyone here tip for takeout during the pandemic? I always tip certain restaurants even for takeout since I'm trying to finish their whole menu. What is the general accepted tip % for takeout and dine in, and how does each differ for # of guests you're bringing along at your seat?

For my favorite restaurants that I always tip, I limit what I buy to around $30 so I can tip $5.

For a restaurant that has massive portions, I tip $5 for a $20 dish since it's so big.

How do YOU tip food delivery like ubereats and doordash? I know they prioritize takeout orders that tip high. I've seen photos of tipping etiquette but all I've seen are about pre-pandemic tipping.

Should people tip more because of pandemic, same amount pre-pandemic or less? Should your tipping amount depend on how the restaurant shares tips?

How do YOU calculate how much you tip on the quality of the service you received? I know one place I went to my mom hated the food and service so I think I didn't tip since I felt bad my mom I treated didn't have a good time.

I also didn't tip 1 time because I hated a particular dish. And what do you guys think about
"Covid Surcharge" for restaurants? Yay or nay?

Share your pandemic tipping etiquette down below!

I took notes from Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs :P

Good news is we don't go to a lot of places that expect tip, and we also don't like the food being delivered to our place (we'll pick it up for to-go).

I use to tip a lot and would try about 20% in the past. This was when I was living with family and didn't have financial responsibilities... I was very silly. I went to study in the UK and it's super weird to do it over there people would even be shocked if you let them keep the loose change... some places will automatically take care of it for you with a small "service charge" they'll disclose on the menu.

My financial responsibilities grew by the time I came back to the US. It was just really hard to get back into it. I understand the workers are being jaded when nobody will budge on their wage, and so I'll make sure to tip if it is (likely) expected, but the typical amount will be about $2 sometimes up to $4 depending on how much we spent and the quality of the service, but we normally do not spend more than $35 on the meals (for two) and we're pretty straightforward/easy customers.

There are lots of great people and talented employees you don't tip for example a really nice cashier at a retail store like Target or Primark when you go there or people at chains like Chipotle.. Nobody will glare at you if you don't tip there even if you get really excellent service or order a lot. I don't want the tipping schemes ones like some restaurants to make the employee pay for it (some funky shenanigans with their taxes) and so I'll pay the minimum so that it doesn't come out of their check, but it's not my job as the customer to transform their minimum wage job into a $35/hr for being (superficially) nice.

Tipping is a cultural phenomenon, and therefore there is no global standard. The norms for tipping are different in different countries/regions.

Tipping is different from one country to another.
It can differ both by types of recipient and amount tipped (if any). Some people who render a service of some kind never receive or expect a tip, in some countries it is even illegal to tip.

Before Covid when I went out with the family several of us left a £20 note under the plates as a thank you to the servers. So a few times a server may have got £100+ for looking after us.

Since Covid sadly I've not been out and no plans too any time soon.

It's not worth the risk to them or to me or my family.

So if you do go out and enjoy your meal with your family remember the high risk the severs have to go through to look after you. Make it worth their time and tip super well. Don't be a tightwad and tip $5 when you could make someones life much better and happiers by tipping $50+

Tip well VERY well. ;)

"Video of Doordash driver commenting on tip sparks debate about gratuity | GMA"

With the recent video of the doordash driver complaining about his $5 tip from delivering a $20 pizza, I am seeing a 20% gratuity for delivery from searching. I searched reddit and it's depending on distance and weather. I don't use food delivery services but this does seem like a fair amount. My friends use it and I'll ask them how much they tip. I've never had a covid surcharge back when I originally made this thread and I'd be annoyed if I got it in my bill these days. I would never tip for fast food and I noticed some terminals have a tip added when I see the price on it.

Title changed as requested.

Unless the service is really bad I always tip and the amount depends on how much I'm paying - if I'm not spending much (say a single coffee for example), I'll often tip almost as much as it cost.

For more expensive things I just try to work out what's fair.

As noted above when this thread was fresh, tipping very much depends on where you are.

In the Doordash case, complaining about a 25% tip seems unnecessarily entitled anywhere, though.

For takeout, I usually don't tip unless the person goes above and beyond in explaining menu items and approchability. If they do the "bare minimum", I quickly hit no tip. If I feel like they're putting in serious effort, I'll leave a small tip (maybe $1 or $2).

For delivery orders, I tend to tip a minimum of $3 dollars and will go upward to $10 dollars depending on the size of the order. I don't use delivery services too often. The prices in the app vs the restaurant or local vendor prices tend to be incredibly and noticably steep...
