I always enjoy watching the Olympics, at least some events. There's a good bit of pride that goes into watching your country's athletes compete, but even if none have made it in, there are plenty of the competitions I like watching anyway.

That said, I don't think the Olympics should be happening at all this time around, at least not until the pandemic is completely over and resolved. This feels like a mistake that'll only serve to spread more cases, and not get the proper hype and fun that the Olympics deserve. If it was my call, I would've said that skipping this 4-year bracket of the summer Olympics altogether would be the way to go, but of course there are tons of things that I'm sure are being taken into account to have swayed the decision to where it stands now.

General Tap - This year should have been cancelled; Tokyo could have hosted the event in a year or two which would have allowed the Covid spread and Vaccine rollout do it's thing. More people would have been able to enjoy the games and be a part of it.

Other than this, the Olympics would be a 10 for me, even though these days I don't watch much if it, I know it's going on and it's a great way to bring the world together. It's a great event.

Watching the opening ceremony and so far it's been pretty dull.

Just the usual parade by the athletes, but into any empty stadium... it's good they're taking things carefully though. All wearing masks too.

A real sign of the times is that loads of the competitors are filming themselves with their phones while entering the stadium... not very dignified IMO.

Update. 6 people are carrying a flag. That's the most exciting thing that has happened so far.
Where's the lasers and fireworks?! And giant robots!

Further update: Now 8 people are carrying the flag. I guess it got a bit heavy for 6 people.
No I was wrong, back to six again.

23.22 Tokyo time: Flag now being hoisted up pole and people singing a bit.
23:25: This is more like it, thousands of paper doves.
23:30 Now there's some expected weirdness, people in odd suits enacting the symbols for each event.
23:56: ...and now some Kabuki theatre accompanied by a pianist.

That's the end of the live reporting for now, you have not been charged for this service. ;)

I usually like watching some Olympic events and yeah the Olympics are a great thing every 4 years, but this one doesn't seem like the Olympics. Too many top athletes are not there because of the pandemic.

I'll give it 4/10 on my excitement level.

I saw a bit of the people being the symbols, I didn't find it interestiung so turned over. I know things can't be like they usually are but the bits I've watched of the highlights on the BBC website are rather boring. Even the drones in the sky didn't surprise me. If those are considered the highlights what's the rest of it like?

The only stuff I've actually watched so far (rather than just having it on in the background) is the Taekwondo. Everyone had high hopes for another gold for Jade Jones but she was beaten in the final... as was Brad Sinden from the mean's GB team.
