It's a reference at least, but given the time elapse from the background of the story (10,000 years from the first incident with Calamity Ganon), and who knows how long since the other games (not to mention in the WW timeline, they founded a completely new Hyrule on a completely different continent, sooo there's that), I just don't think it's really plausible.

Basically where I ended up with it too - nice little easter egg perhaps, but very slim chance it's anything other than that. The real hard evidence is... well, pretty poor hahaha. Community Manager for Jagex

In Oracle of Seasons I think you can get the red ring by defeating the Golden Octorok!

I think in Minish Cap it's just rupees though

Technically they are Rupi/Rupy (plural being Rupies), but localised as Rupee. I assume it was a misinterpretation of the word Ruby originally.

Lol I got scammed today! Without a warning or confirm and my permission and I unwillingly purchased a red potion by misstake by just pressing the ''A'' on the item inside the shop!
I then see my rupees ticking down! Eh!
Was the GBA game Zelda Link to the past! Started playing it today!
Now I'm poor again!
