The Rolling Stones are legendary when it comes to Rock & Roll music. Although if I had to pick a name and when reading the question Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Beatles comes to mind.

Ooh, shiny things!
Yep, The Stones and The Who are legends and massively influential - listen to some of The Who's early stuff and you can see the roots of Punk Rock long before it came about. Just listen to "My Generation" for example.
Led Zeppelin are another favourite, though probably not classed as "typical" Rock & Roll... Rock for sure though.
They even did a song called Rock & Roll:

The one's already named were the greatest, no doubt, and I loved them all.
There were a lot of great artists in the 50's like Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Dion and The Belmonts, Nat King Cole, Frankie Avalon, Ray Charles just to name a few. Some of these artists made it into the 60's era.
More recent, I'd add Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors and The Kinks. The Monkeys wasn't one of my favorites, but they had some good songs.
Music is the Heartbeat of the World
Let's flip a coin; heads I win, tails you lose. Fair enough?
They're not my favorite band, but if we're going by bands that define rock n roll, my vote has to go to AC/DC. Their music is the posterchild of rock n roll.
this is too hard of a question there are too many sub genres of rock

buddy holly (i have a tattoo of buddy holly) the OG rock n rollers. is where i think ill have to stick with as if we dont have them we dont have the music we have now
