I used Samsung phones for like 10 years (I used to work for Samsung so for some of that time I was required to have one.) At some point I switched to Apple for its ecosystem, parental controls and just to try something new. When I was using Samsung phones, I upgraded every year, whether I could technically afford it or not, I found a way. Contract buy outs, trade-in credits, buying unlocked. Looking back I hate that guy, I don't know why I did it other than in the earlier years the differences were more noticeable and enticing to make you want the new model.

But now that I've switched to Apple, I have no intention of switching back. That's not a jab at Samsung or Android in any way, Apple just had the products and ecosystem that fit my specific needs. So now I keep my devices as long as I can, my first iPhone was the iPhone X and I would have kept it until about now but the trade in's they did for the iPhone 13 Pro Max essentially made the phone free. Also, I came from the Note series and missed having a big phone. :P

Waste of money to keep upgrading and beware of the 'rentals' that phone companies hide, make sure your 'buying' it.

^i nearly lost my S20, lucky enough they 'lost' my account and was easier for them for me pay 100 extra to keep it. Magic is ironic, I have great luck when anyone tries to scam me :P how 1600$ is a rental fee is beyond me.

I use my Samsung A53 for calls and tethering my PC internet. S20 for mobile games and S6 that still works for mobile games as well.

---

It all depends on what you use a phone for on how much hardware it has to require.

That’s a good point! Seems the majority here are Samsung. No sign of Google pixel yet.

I was looking at nothing phone yesterday. It seems iMessage can be used on there so will this cause some users to shift I wonder. I don’t really like the lights on the back of the phone but it is affordable.

I think I have a galaxy s4 or some shit, so I really don't care about the newest and best phone lol

I think I used to own a galaxy s6 at one point . There was a quick shift from blackberry to that.

I wonder what the next big shift will be ~

I used an S6 Galaxy Edge Plus for years and it was more than enough for my needs. It was showing its age (knackered battery mainly) and would no longer fast charge (due to a motherboard fault). Rather than try to fix it, I decided it was time to upgrade.

I upgraded to an Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro in January 2020 and haven't looked for anything else since. This phone is more than enough for my needs. I'm not a heavy phone user. I mostly use either a laptop or my desktop PC. The phone does come in handy sometimes though.

I don't think it's worth upgrading every year, no. I'm like this with all tech though. I don't make PC upgrades every year even though I find tinkering with PCs fun. I just don't feel the need to. I'll generally keep tech for years if it continues to be useful. If it breaks, I'll try to fix it if it's still useful. If it can't be fixed or isn't useful, then I'll consider upgrading.

I have a drawer full of old mobile phones, dating back to my first Motorola MicroTAC Ultra Lite in 1995. I've dabbled with Samsung, Motorola and Apple since then.

Since retiring, I must admit that I cannot justify upgrading my phone. My Samsung S21 is still going strong.

Apple user here, I only get a new phone when my current one starts to die (usually catastrophically where it's barely functional). As far as exchanges though it depends on the carrier, I know Verizon has that "upgrade" deal for after you payoff your current device. You still got to pay activation fees and depending on the phone it adds to the monthly bill a little but not severely.

I started out with the iPhone 6S, the battery on that one crapped out and the phone went into a bootloop of death. Then the iPhone 10S, the screen's touch sensors went out on half the screen (probably because I dropped it a lot) and my current one is now the iPhone 13.

I've been using and abusing the 13 for a long time now, screen always on for watching videos in the background at work. Battery life is down to 90% but it still operates quick like it should, I drop it like a mad man all the time too but it's pretty robust in a bulky Otterbox case.
