For dogs, at least for me, it's about companionship and a mutually beneficial relationship. My dogs protect the household while I'm gone, they are my hunting partners, my running partners, my camping buddies, my backpacking pals, they are there for me when I come home from work. They provide a ray of sunshine in a world growing darker by the minute. In return, I provide them shelter, a guaranteed source of food, protection, and all the belly rubs and scratches behind the ears their doggy hearts could desire.
