Self driving cars are an impressive idea that has materialized in reality, just like GPS technology: who would have imagined thirty years ago this will be an everyday tool? Guess that's why they call it improvement. Well, to some extent.

It's nearly impossible to think about modern societies without the prominent use of tools on a daily basis and by that, I include the invention of wheel nearly 5500 years ago (according to today's evidence) in Mesopotamia, considered to be the greatest invention in human history (debatable, of course). Virtually, every modern tool has structures that resemble wheels and its multiple derivations.

But it seems technology is taking away jobs maybe a bit too fast , fueled by the "innovation" hype, one you can see in the sparkling eyes of inventors, researchers and developers.

Ok, "pessimistic switch" on:

Imagine a 99% automatized world (it could happen); still you need that 1% human factor, otherwise it couldn't be called society (by today standards). Imagine a world of robots/cyborgs/androids doing all for us, including driving our cars, trucks, trains and airplanes (spaceships?). Let's suppose that future is bright : efficient, productive, respectful and most of all, fair. What the jobs of tomorrow will be like, if artificial beings do everything we humans used to do ?

What about art, a genuine human expression? Artists also have a job: doing art. And it is a very important job, as necessary as other jobs in many fields of knowledge an it's also a serious activity that demands discipline and tenacity.

Why do art should be considered a job? Simple: just as medics work to change a given scenery of reality in an objective way (recovering health), the artists do the same... but in a subjective way: working to make us see reality from a different perspective. Both the medic and the artist should be able to live thanks to their own job, in other words, receive a decent payment that reflect their efforts.

A robot playing violin can be called an artist?

I believe not. It lacks sensibility. And it lacks the important human capacity (yeah, it actually is) of making mistakes . Maybe the robot will perform the greatest of violin concerts without a single mistake, but if an artistic performance is defined as "a unique moment that it'll never repeat again" (even if the performers, musical piece and conditions are the same), then how a robot, which can't make mistakes (humans make mistakes, not machines) can make art? IT CAN'T.

Side note: academic musicians usually never read and play a given music sheet like a scanner would do at 100%, a fact which is remarkable with highly technical demanding works for piano concertos, such as the works of Liszt, Brahms or Rachmaninov. They usually play 80%-90% of all the notes... and do a lot of mistakes along the way.

What make us organic, human... living beings ? Making mistakes and learning from them. Something a machine will never do, if you remove the human factor.

Sorry for two long posts, it was something my soul felt the need to type down :P

I think AI of that magnitude is still a few centuries away, if it's even possible in the first place (e.g., combining biology with technology to bypass physical limits of current technology [overheating]), so don't you worry your poor little socks about your job being taken away.

4 years on forums and never noticed there is this thing in the bottom right corner of the chat box you can extent the box with.
Whatcha talking about?

At the bottom-right corner of the quick-reply box, there's a tiny arrow to drag the size of the box which makes it possible to see a full post in one view without scrolling.

Pretty neat - I was enlightened of its existence just this week too lol! :P
