They used to be Class 1 (artic) Class 2 (any HGV but trailer limited) Class 3 ( up to 7.5 tonne + limited trailer)
If you passed your test before 1st Jan 1997 you'll have C1 entitlements then we came into line with the EU and made it a separate test...
Now it is
Category C1 (old Class 3)
Category C (old class 2) (I'm doing this one)
Category C + E (old class 1)
You can do C1 or C straight off
For C + E you'd need to get C license and then do the artic course used to have to wait so many months before you could do it but now you can do them one after another
Also if you passed before jan 1997 you'll have C1+E so can tow a bit more weight.
It is pretty confusing tbh.
One of my dads stories of when they were pulled up at a hgv check point they wouldn't let his colleague drive because his license didn't have the category on it (this was VOSA) even though he passed long before 1997. When he got home he rang em up at the DVLA who said that's because it didn't exist as a class when he passed his test and these were the people who are supposed to know about them lol.
