Saw something this morning that made me smile; I've got an old milk churn in the garden and was idly staring out of the back door drinking my tea when a little gang of Bluetits fluttered down and took it in turns to have a leisurely bath in the 2 inches of water accumulated in the lid.
I do ensure there's always non-frozen water available for the birds in cold weather but maybe it's simply been too cold for them to want to bathe lately.
It warmed up to a 'scorching' 7C today and they made the most of it. Why they chose to wait in line for this tiny receptacle instead of the proper bird-bath 10 feet away is a mystery, but their incessant tweeting and fluttering and their obvious pleasure at flapping around in the water really lifted my spirits. Thank you, little birdies
