You are obviously very kind-hearted and some poeple can just be stubborn and proud about accepting help.

You could maybe offer to do a laundry load for him, practical yet not too personal, that is assuming he doesn't have easy access to laundry facilities and you do.

I have offered that, actually. He just says that he isn't poor, just homeless

Tbh, I think homeless is pretty much synonymous with poor, because shelter is a basic human need. But, I have never been homeless, so idk. I worked with him for several years, so I know he a bit rough around the edges, so maybe he knows a thing or two about living on the streets.
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

Sounds like he's either extremely frugal or in denial about being poor. Do you know the circumstances surrounding his homelessness?

He hinted at it by saying something like 'I can't believe dating a girl would cause this'. I didn't ask, because I am trying to sidestep any possible emotional connection that could turn into something more on one side or both sides. Been there, done that, got on over my head a few times before, so I'm not going down that road again.

And, idk, he might be in denial. Again, I am not pressing the issue for selfish reasons, but I am offering help. If he was a girl, I would totally be there emotionally for him, but he isn't a girl soooo there is that dynamic. I mean, if there was a girl that was homeless, how would you navigate that situation without getting emotionally involved? Is it possible to help without getting emotionally involved?

Just out of curiosity, try searching his name here http://courts.mi.gov/opinions_orders/opinions_orders/pages/default.aspx and see if there's a restraining order against him. That might shed some light on the "dating a girl" comment.

I even used the first part of that link and if requires a login and password with no 'create user' option. I would be shocked if he was on there for abuse, tbh, but yet again it is always the ones you trust.
